DC Public and Public Charter Schools
| We have not done well in the lottery but may have a shot at a charter that’s very far for us. We won’t have much time to decide if that happens. The only way we could make it work for a year while we figure out what to do would be an after school nanny to pick up and drive home. Could anyone let me know roughly what that would cost? It would be about 10-15 hours per week so presumably at least $200? It may be difficult to find someone to do this but I know it is possible. This school could be a great long term solution for us but would require moving. Thanks! |

That estimate is about right. Easier to find someone if they can use your car (eg college student).
But IMO there is no charter school worth moving for. |

It could easily be higher because you may have to pay a real premium given the difficulty of finding someone with limited hours, ability to drive, and someone you trust to drive.
And remember, if you find someone, if they quit (hardly unlikely since this isn't that stable), are away, sick, etc, finding a replacement on the fly will be very hard. |
| The nice thing about DC is the number of colleges. We’ve hired college students to do school pick ups when my kids were younger and aftercare was too long of a day. We paid $12 an hour and let them drive my car while I took metro. |
How did you go about finding them. |

Offering less than $20/hr would be nuts. $25/hr would be more in line with typical expectations. You don't want to keep replacing the person.
Post your excellent rate and complete/clear expectations on your neighborhood list serve and with local colleges. If the price is right, you'll find what you want. It helps if your child is well-behaved. |

College student will take $15 an hour. Which college do you live near? Does the school go through 12th grade? Would you let a high school senior do it?
[I assume since you struck out in the lottery a few times you have at least a K student] |
