| I’m assuming we have no chance but wanted a reality check. TIA! |

They made 20 seats available for initial library, so unlikely.
|
| It's time for another Latin. As a parent who lived through round one, it took a LOT of work. I wonder what the status and will is for starting another? |
|
Looks like they went 47 deep into their wait list last year, so I would say yes, there is a shot!

| The list may move. The likely are just getting a handle on the number of kids leaving for high school (Walls, etc.). |
According to their Board minutes (available on its website) they are “exploring it.” They say they would want to locate in award 7 or 8 in part to address the lack of economic (not racial/ethnic) diversity now in its younger grades. |

Thank you to the person who posted the link to the site for the data. It's interesting to me that for SY 2017-2018, Latin made offers for 9th grade through waitlist spot #47 whereas in 2016-2017 they only made offers for 9th through waitlist spot #6 and in 2015-2016 they only made offers for 9th through waitlist spot #14. I believe I'm reading the data correctly?
Anyone have any insight into why they went so deep for 2017-2018 vs. the other years? Thanks! |
| On a related note, does anyone know if Washington Latin increases the size of the 9th grade class, apart from attrition? |
The high school class size didn’t change much - they always land at 90 students for 9th grade. The middle school is wealthier now than it has ever been. High SES kids have more options. More students left for SWW, private and/or are IB for Wilson and left for a bigger pond. |
They backfill to keep the class at ~90 students. |
|
But it's just backfill? The 8th grade is also 90 students?
|
Right. Just backfill. So the numbers for 9th really depend on how many leave for other high school options, which can change dramatically from year to year. The high school is strong academically but is still small and doesn't offer as much in the way of activities and sports as a bigger school like Wilson or Walls. So some kids opt out after 8th. |
I think that had an unusually high number of kids leave after 8th last year. No idea why the waitlist went so deep. Maybe lots of folks put it on their lottery list but had other options. The same thing could happen again this year, though, so don't lose hope! |
And kids on the WL have probably also lotteried for SWW etc. |
| Any movement on the Latin 9th grade waitlist? |
