FCPS School Calendar Survey

Anonymous
If you are a parent of an FCPS student, check your email if you're interested in weighing in on the FCPS school calendar. The superintendent sent out a poll, including options to start two weeks before Labor Day, one week before Labor Day, or the Tuesday after Labor Day.

They do that survey stuff to look like they care about parents' input. It's all for show.

The school calendar is already determined. Don't waste your time.

yup we go through this drill every year and nothing changes. I really wish they would publish their survey findings so we could know what the majority really wants.

They better not go back to starting after Labor Day.

That is a terrible schedule.

They need to align the schedule to AP exams and college summer intensives so the students are out no kate4 than early June.

+1. And I mentioned the national testing schedule concerns in my reply on the survey.

I disagree and said so in my survey. I like the after Labor Day start and one week later in June end.

It may depend on what age your kids are.

I think it does depend on the age. I was going to say after Labor Day until I read about the high school exam schedule. My oldest is starting high school next year so I'm leaning toward before Labor Day.

The survey was also sent to teaching staff and I answered the same.

I don't care as long as kids are out by mid June.

Start the Monday before Labor Day. Kids and teachers use the first week to go over class rules, bring in supplies, learn their way around, etc. Tuesday after Labor Day, kids are ready to learn in earnest. Last day of school should be around June 10th.

FCPS does a lot just-for-show

I love the idea of a set spring break, say the last week in March every year. Would be great some years to not pay peak travel prices!

I actually voted for that option, too. I hadn’t considered it before the survey, but when I saw it, I thought “that sounds better!”

I live in Loudoun. Our school board discussed this and voted against it because it would be a burden on teachers/staff who live in Loudoun but work in FCPS or vice versa. Maybe we could all agree to a set week!

I have little kids and teens.

Starting in August and getting out in early June is the best option for both age groups.

Little kids are bored by the end of August and eager to get back to school and their friends.

They shut down soon after the SOLs and by June all they want is to get out of school. There is very little productive learning happening in elementary schools in June. It essentially becomes babysitting time for 3 weeks.
