H. D. Cooke?

We're military moving from out of state and found some homes within the boundary of Cooke. I like the mission of the school from the website but concerned about my 3rd grader more than my PK3 child going to a Title 1 school. I'm all for diversity, but seems my 3rd grader may be the only white kid in class. I'd prefer a good mix rather than her being 1%. A lot of the forums info I found is several years old. Anyone have updated, first hand comments? For that matter, the other schools in Mt Pleasant such as Bancroft, etc? (we did not get anything from the lottery). Thanks!

Welcome to DC.

Bancroft is a dual language, Spanish-English school. Unless your older child can pass a proficiency test they would not be allowed to start there, and your PK3 child is unlikely to get a seat (few offered in the lottery, and probably all claimed). If you live IB for Bancroft the monolingual alternative school is Tubman.

I don't know anyone who attends Cooke. Its largest cohort is Latinx, with 37% being ELL. Its testing grades (3rd and above) do better than the DC average in Math, although the ELA lags, to be expected with so many native Spanish speakers.

I have a current 2nd grader at HD Cooke. We are a non-Latino white family planning to stay through 5th grade. I’m happy to answer any questions you have about the school. My child hasn’t had any issues being the only white girl in her class. We have been there since she was 4.
