Realistically. If I have a 12 year old, should I start looking at private school?
But IS THERE ANYTHING that we parents can do to get the ball moving faster? Young minds don't have time for them to strategize and plan forever. |
| Do you have 25-40k annually that you won’t miss? If yes, start private school. If no, attend McPS. |
|
The recommendation is rollout a new K-8 ELA and math curriculum within three years. Sounds like the MCPS goal is to begin procurement this summer. I really don't see why there can't be workbooks or something equivalent available by the fall. I understand that it would be too much to demand teachers fully implement this, without training, on that time frame. But how could it hurt to have these materials as a back-up by the fall?
The separate question is what to do about student deficiencies. I don't hear that being broached. |
In this case, the school should offer vouchers. My Dos has one more year of 2.0. I would like him to have a good with grade experience. |
|
Weren't they piloting several programs? If so, then it will take some time before they 1) determine which program is best and 2) how to roll it out.
But . . . I'm guessing that, as usual, they'll push through this one w/o much teacher input. b/c teachers don't matter |
| MCPS teacher here, looks like we are going back to textbooks. I've already started getting textbooks from my staff development teacher to begin looking at before the summer hits. |
I didn't hear that. I thought JH said there are quality curricula and there are districts that have used them for multiple years. It's only necessary to copy a similar district's choice. |
Praise Jesus! How does this all impact kids currently taking algebra? Will geometry next year be 2.0? A new curriculum? |
| I can't speak for high school only elementary school. I'd gather that HS will continue with 2.0 but most teachers at the high school level use a mix of math curriculum pre 2.0 believe it or not. If you are at a school where there are a lot of older mature teachers, those teachers may only bother to thrown in a 2.0 lesson when they are getting observed. Most times they have enough materials if they have been teaching for 10+ years. |
No. Or rather, yes, if that's what you want to do. (Really, I don't understand this sudden outbreak of "MCPS-ruined-my-children's-future-and-we-must-now-all-flee-at-once" posts. Did your child start MCPS in kindergarten? What have you been doing between then and now?) |
From the writing style, a lot of them seem to be from the same person (the one who posted this AM about how MCPS ruined her son’s education). |
The panic-stricken posts are over the top. My kids are just fine. My oldest started pre-2.0 and that math curriculum was a mess. I think 2.0 has its drawbacks but it’s actually been a bit better for math. DC2 moved from public to private a few years ago and certainly didn’t seem behind. What I dislike about 2.0 are all the worksheets and the lack of text books, but it’s not as though my kids aren’t learning. I hope they will think through the next curriculum and not rush to release it. |
1. I hope this means MS students get to use a backpack during the school day. 2. MS parents, prepare your kids now to remember to bring the textbooks home! Not being able to complete homework or study for a test because you forgot your textbook is a grade killer. |
I feel bad for her. She sounds desperate. I think in one post she said her son is failing. If her kid is really struggling, she may have an impulse to blame it all on the curriculum. I mean, there are definitely problems with the curriculum, but most kids aren’t failing. So something must be going on that’s making her hysterical. |
What are you talking about? My DC is a junior, has been issued a couple books, but is not expected to bring them to school. |
