High school waitlists?

Anonymous
Trying to predict how much we'll move for 9th grade, and our experience four years ago with DC #1 doesn't seem useful anymore given the increasing number of kids who seem to be applying.

9th grade --
School Without Walls: waitlist 78
Washington Latin: waitlist 13
Wilson: waitlist 25

No chance at Wilson and Latin. Can’t speak to sww.

New to this, for the test in high schools, if if says "matched" does that mean you have a spot for sure (as in you passed all the hurdles, etc. and can now enroll)?

Yes. Congrats to your kid.

Agree re Wilson.

Last year Latin went to #20 on its list so there's a shot.

I think there is an excellent shot at Latin. My DD is in 8th grade at WL and most of her friends looked around at privates and Walls. I think many of them will opt to stay, but I bet there will be more than 10 slots opening up.

The issue is whether they already offered those 10 or so spots in the lottery and they have already been filled. If they offered 0-5 spots in the lottery, then a #13 waitlist number should get you in, but if they have already filled those 10 spots then you may be out of luck. Also, kids are just hearing about Walls today.

Can anyone provide a link to the information about how many students a particular school took off the wait-list last year? I feel like I have seen this before but can't seem to track it down.

I'm a reporter at ABC7 News. I'd like to talk to parents nervous about what the waitlist numbers mean for their HS child. What options are you looking at if you don't get in? Please email me at ndbaca@sbgtv.com. Thanks!

From another thread: This will be helpful to a number of folks. Here is the MySchoolDC waitlist data for the last several years. https://public.tableau.com/profile/aaron2446#!/viz...istOfferData/MSDCPublicDisplay

When I use this link, I don't get any info - just the logo for public tableau. Am I missing something?

Me too. You can also go to the MySchoolDC website and under the Resources tab click on Data. That has the table as well.

Will you also include the reasoning behind this crazy lottery system? If equity is the goal, I don’t think it can be achieved by a random lottery system. I haven’t been in this area long, but what in the world would possess people to drive themselves crazy like this year after year? We told our realtor we needed a really good system. She targeted two counties, and we made our choice. Yes, we have to commute into the city, but I would prefer that over this maddening “system” that only seems to work for a few people. What gives? Is the Tuition Assistance Grant driving this? I’m really trying to understand.

Good luck to everyone.

It works for few lucky ones and the ones who move IB to good schools. We commute to Fairfax. We stay because we like the city and our neighborhood.
We told our realtor the schools we want, chose between the building, yes, we have a commute outside the city and there's no maddening system. You get a free school 2 years earlier than in Va.
Lots of space more 100s of families here. They just don't want to live in apartments/condos. I'd rent out my home somewhere else and move IB to a good school and then moved back in few years before they change the policy. I don't want my kid on a bus for long time or start middle school at 7:30 am. Lot's of choices in DC. Just can't have it all unless you are rich.
