Does anyone have any experience with this program? DC is in third grade and we are considering applying. |
Which school specifically?
You might want to check out http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GTAletters/ if you haven't. The people on there are very knowledgeable (and experienced with both home schools and centers for the highly gifted) so I'm sure you'd get some good responses. |
Are you applying from a private school? If in the public schools already, your home school handles a lot of the process -- tests you in school, etc. You can self-nominate if the school doesn't nominate you. |
I only know of centers for the Moderately Gifted. |
21:29 There are levels of giftedness, moderate, highly, exceptionally and profoundly So highly isn't the highest, that would be profoundly gifted.

It's the name of the program. If you have a beef with it, take it up with MCPS. |
We just entered one of the HGCs. It's only been a month, but in general I'd say it's a better fit for our DC. If you're interested, you should attend the MCPS info session for parents on Oct. 12th or 27th. You can get more info on the programs thru the parents webpage on the MCPS site.

Your lack of a sense of humor is showing.... |
Our child is GT . We would not even considerer removing him from his friends. Of the past 3years. He is in a great MC school. |

I wasn't trying to be funny. I was trying to educate the person who posted the following comment. Apparently I wasn't the only one who found it silly-snarky. As for humor, if you know any jokes about gifted children or gifted and talented programs, please share. I don't believe I have ever heard one. I only know of centers for the Moderately Gifted. |
That is fine that you wouldn't consider it. But for some kids, they fit more naturally with the extremely motivated kids and in the high levels in the centers. Your mind sound made up, but for an interesting thought experiment you might imagine what might happen if your kid made new friends and was at the same time incredibly challenged. [There tends to be a lot less bullying in these programs, and kids tend to be friendly and kind, by the way. In addition, teachers don't put up with that crap.] |
Sigh. Everybody on this thread probably already knows the different types of giftedness (I'm 20:20, and I do). So lecturing to us in the wake of somebody else's lame joke is just ... lame. Don't take yourself so seriously was my only point. |
