Maui - which Marriott property and best flight?

Anonymous
Should I use my Marriott points at Wailea Beach Resort or Ritz Kapalua?

And is it best to go IAD-Honolulu and then take a flight to Maui, or do iAd-SFO-Maui?

If we want to make a San Fran stop for two nights, better to do it on the way there or back?

Three kids - 13,12 and 5

We always stop in SF, airport is good for dinner and a little running around. We like Kapalua but it's further from stuff like Paia and shopping. Wailea is very nice.

With your kids ages I’d do the Marriott beach club or something like that- it’s in Wailea. We used mostly points for an 8 day stay and still couldn’t get breakfast for under $100 for 5 of us. I’ve stayed at bit of the other resorts- lovely but worth it for husband and I- not the 5 of us. We liked the Marriott- great beach with options, good food available a resort and still a beautiful trip.

Definitely Wailea - better weather and less wind/surf

Check out the guide book Maui revealed (or just look at a map of the weather zones on the island)

Kapalua has a rockier beach and more wind which is going to be tough on the 5 year old

Maui resident here, don't listen to this comment! Kapalua has one of the nicest sandy beaches in all of Hawaii, just Google Kapalua Beach and you'll see. Ritz is a much higher end property and I assume will take more points. It also has Fleming beach which by the way is sandy.

You can also transfer for your Marriott points to Starwood Points and do a Westin or St Regis

We just flew from the Big Island to SFO. It was nice not to do a red eye on the way home. Our flight was supposed to leave at 1:45 and land around 10:20, but was delayed 2 hrs. I was really glad not to be struggling to make a connection.

NP. Kapalua Beach is lovely but the beaches in Wailea are just as nice (if not more) and less crowded. Kapalua Beach always seems jammed during popular travel times.

Either is nice, and I agree you should stop in SF. I would stop on way back when you are tired.

Link your SPG account to your Marriott account and then transfer to SPG and book Weston or St. Regis on spg.com

Maui's airport is straight-up third-world. No way would I want to struggle through check-in and boarding for a long-haul flight out of there. The inter island flights are a little easier to navigate.

You have no idea what you are talking about. The tropics are not for you.

I just flew to Hawaii. On the way there we had a 2 hr layover in LA which was perfect.

On the way back we flew Maui to Honolulu, and then Honolulu to IAD... that was a LONG flight, and it's shorter on the way back than out. If I were to do it again, I'd break it up more evenly and stop im CA- exception: you fly first class in the sleeper seats. In that case I would take the long flight to HNL
