Out-of-Boundary Process

Each year schools project how many seats will be available for students who live outside the boundaries for that school. Parents who live outside a specific school's boundary may apply for enrollment at these schools through the out-of-boundary process. Parents may view the projections (Available Seats, left-hand side of the screen) and apply online for each child (Please note: All applications are submitted online, with assistance available for those who require it. Please contact Student Services for assistance in access to computers, interpreter assistance, etc.). This year the out-of-boundary process is occurring from February 5 (beginning at midnight) – March 12, 2008 (ending at midnight).

Children whose parents have applied online through the process described above will be entered into a computerized lottery selection to occur on March 14 at 6:00 pm (All applications received from February 5 – March 12 receive equal weight in the lottery according to the selection criteria). Following this lottery, results will be posted on the website. Additionally, DCPS will mail written notifications to all applicants by March 31, 2008.

The Out-of-Boundary Process for Pre-K Enrollment:

The Pre-K out-of-boundary process is also completed online. However, because Pre-K attendance is not compulsory, Pre-K spots are not guaranteed (whether students live in-boundary or out-of-boundary). Parents should contact the school for details regarding pre-k enrollment in their neighborhood school

Details on process:

Seats made available for Out-of-Boundary applications will be filled in accordance with Board approved selection criteria until all spaces are filled or all requests are granted. Please note that the indicated number of available seats is an estimate based on current and projected enrollment, and therefore is subject to change. No Child Left Behind (NCLB) School Choice option transfers take precedence over discretionary out-of-boundary transfers; therefore, NCLB placements receive priority. If the number of requests exceeds the number of spaces available at the school, a lottery procedure, using a computerized random selection process, is administered at DCPS headquarters as described above.

Note on Specialized Schools Programs, and Academies:

Schools, programs and academies such as McKinley Technology High School, School Without Walls, Oyster Bilingual ES, Health and Human Services Academy at Eastern SHS, Hyde ES Reading and Writing Project Program etc) do not participate in the out-of-boundary process. Please contact the school directly for more information. To view a list of specialized programs and schools, click on ‘Specialized Programs’ in the yellow left column of your screen. For detailed contact information for all schools, click on Schools Directory.

Sample Out-of-Boundary Application: Please note that this form is a sample only. As all applications must be completed online, this form will not be accepted as a paper application.
