TTC and short cycles

Anonymous
We're trying to conceive with #2. Backstory- I got pregnant easily at 35, miscarried at 7 weeks, then got pregnant with DS two months later. At 38, I got pregnant very easily again last summer, just a couple months after I completely stopped breastfeeding. Miscarried and had a D&C at 10 weeks.

Now it's been 6 months of trying with no luck, which has me a bit worried considering how easily I got pregnant in the past. I've been trying to track my cycles and they have been short- like 24 days. Based on ovulation tests and cervical mucus, I am pretty sure that I am ovulating early, like at day 10. Temping has been problematic because my pottytraining 2yo has been waking more frequently (which meaning I'm waking more frequently). But I'm fairly confident based on the other signs. This is bad, right? Is there anything that can be done to correct it? Would I go to my OB or a fertility specialist?

Are you up to date on your annual? A fertility clinic will want you to have had one, and a good OB can prescribe the initial tests and might have some insight.

Good luck, and I'm sorry for your losses.

Sorry about your losses, OP. Totally understand the difficulty of temping with a potty training toddler. I have one myself.

You want your follicular phase (time between day 1 and ovulation) to be at least 12 days ideally. Much shorter than that and you could be ovulating immature eggs. I would be nervous if I was consistently ovulating on CD10. Are you taking any supplements or medications? I would start by doing some reading, Taking Charge of Your Fertility is a good place to start. Some supplements can help lengthen FP, but some can shorten it further, so don't start taking things without being 100% sure.

FWIW, your luteal phase seems about 14 days, which is great.

Have you had your thyroid checked? Thyroid problems can mess with your cycle length. You want your tsh between 1 and 2.0, ideally. You need to get the numbers from any bloodwork - don't let them just tell you it's normal, as some labs use outdated ranges.

Seeing an RE would be a good step - they'll test that and other things.

My cycles were 22-25 days and I ovulated on day 10/11. I was 28 when I got pregnant the first time though and 32 the second time. No miscarriages pretty easily got preg both times.

My numbers were normal prior to getting preg both times, doc just said I had short cycles and it was nbd since my luteal phase was 12 days or more.

Get your numbers checked.

My cycles became 24-25 days when I turned 30. They were previously 28 days and I ovulated cd 17. So, I’ve always had a 9 day LP. I got pregnant after a hsg for DD after previously trying for 13 months at age 26. I just got pregnant this cycle and had a HSG on cd 12 just like before. Praying this baby sticks as I’m 6 weeks Tuesday. Good luck. I took coq10 and ate a fertility diet. I’m 30 now and have PCOS.

PP. and my thyroid is fine. Every medical professional always thought it was my thyroid. Perfectly normal.

That's fantastic and gives me hope (another person with short cycles). Did you do anything special?

I did start taking Vitex but have heard that really takes a few months to take effect so I’m not sure it made a difference. Otherwise the usual- OPKs and watching the other signs, etc. But my best guess was that I ovulated on day 11 or 12, which was slightly later than the last couple months. Good luck to you!!

I’m a PP and I think for me both times taking a combo of zinc, folic acid, b6 and vitamin c in addition to a prenatal vitamin helped.
