The school system really hurts their credibility when it jams something through this quickly without even raising the possibility of it to the public beforehand. So much for transparency and community engagement.

They do not need public engagement for this! It’s been in the cip for decades and you can’t have public engagement while you’re trying to negotiate and purchase a property.

Centreville families who will now no longer get an expansion would like a word.

It’s been in the CIP for years as a future, largely unfunded project.

So where is the money coming from to buy this property? What gets deferred or cancelled if this moves forward? Centreville? Dunn Loring? Renovations of elementary schools in the CIP previously planned over the next five years?

And where is the realistic estimate of how much it will cost to convert a private, religious school w/Muslim iconography into a public HS?

Based off of dunne’s crowing at yesterday’s meeting, his numbers assume that it will cost zero dollars to convert the school.

It was bizarre to see the Mount Vernon rep trying to take all the credit for the acquisition of a new school in Sully. Dixit had to push back and then the others made a point to say she was involved.

Right now they are giddy but there will be additional costs.

So were the board members specifically saying they wanted to use this as a high school? Not some other purpose like special programming or anything?

Cue all the Emerald Chase people saying wait no forget we said Chantilly we want to go to the new school! LOL.

It seems pretty clear that this will be for the western high school.

Yeah, well, a good number of us thought that those kids should be moved to other schools nearby with space and not pay for an expansion. I suspect that more people in the County thought that the expansion was an awful idea.

The kids pulled into the new school open space in Herndon, Westfield, South Lakes, and Oakton. Shift kids from Chantilly and Centerville into those schools, which was already being discussed. The Chantilly folks have been pointing to declining enrollment so there was no need to move kids from Chantilly, ok, they can stay put. Centerville sees some kids shift boundaries.

The vote last night was in response to a motion to purchase this as a property specifically for Western HS.

Maybe, but they would need to agree to the move to Fox Mill ES. The Fox Mill move is no longer needed because Westfield has more space with the new HS taking kids from Carson that went to Westfield. So maybe the Emerald Chase families stay at Oak Hill and Westfield and their MS moves to whatever MS feeds Westfield. Carson would be feeding the new HS.

There has been a topic on this board since the day the Saudi's announced the school was closing. Most of us in that area were hoping this would happen.

I'm delighted they are going to save $281 million with this purchase and look forward to their letting us know who else stands to benefit from this strategic move.

Let me guess, you’re the type of person who goes shopping and buys crap they don’t need just because it’s on sale?

Yes, this is what the motion itself says, it calls it "the Western HS property."

Saudis in original Mount Vernon HS - magically/mysteriously became the owners of land zoned for a school next to Carson with no public hearing. Mount Vernon and Francona districts owe Western Fairfax County including Sully District a school site. So cost is 150m less $ to public entity for the land plus minor reno costs. Anyone know the amount the Saudis paid for the land and who got the $?
