Butter & cheese for toddler

Anonymous
My 2 year old toddler, less than 5% weight percentile, has been craving for butter, especially the one from Grassland whipped salted butter (those tiny 5g one they serve you in restaurant). She will lick it off bread & eat it like ice cream. Is it a good brand? Curious what kind of spreadable butter other families use at home for daily basis?

And I also she has been craving the lunchable crackers & cheese square (not the deli meat though). I try to cut a slice of Kraft's cheese into 4 squares, but they are not the same thickness or taste & they stick together. Where I can get something similar to that for those cheese square as snacks? She does not like string cheese.

And, I want to vent that DD falls for commercial packaging, she will eat humus only if the individual package comes with pita chips & humus. I want to save $ by buying big bag of pita chips & humus container, she won't touch the humus at all. She will drink milk only if I pour into a specific cup or the label of milk bottle is pretty . She will eat yogurt only if the label package is pretty (has cartoon), like those squeezable tube one. Arrrrrrr.......

Land o Lakes makes individually packaged cheese squares (well, rectangles) that are thick. My DS loves them!

How thick is the lunchable cheese? Would a slice of packaged American cheese be comparable?

We just switched to Kellygold spreadable. Got it at Giant.

"You get what you get, and you don't get upset." It's going to be a long haul if your 2yo calls all the shots.

I'm not trying to be rude, but why does she have such a say in what is bought? Buy what you want and put up with some fussing for a while and she'll get the picture.

The deli will slice cheese to whatever thickness you want

We use kellygold butter.

Re: the other PP's comments about calling the shots, I admittedly agree.

However, I think that's a lot easier said than done when your child is in the 5% range.

BTW, sounds like she's craving fat right now. I sometimes just give my DS a tablespoon of butter to eat, esp if what we're eating is otherwise pretty low-fat.

The yogurt with the cartoons on them tend to be sweeter tasting, than say Yoplait. My kids eat Yoplait, Kelly Gold cheese, and Brummel and Brown yogurt butter.

Yoplait has more sugar than ice cream

My 2 year old will eat butter straight. I let her because she is in the 3%. However, I've introduced her to brie, which she likes just as much.

She also is heavily influenced by packaging, which can be a good thing. For example, I buy edamame pouches with Dora the Explorer and that is one of the few vegetables she eats.

Yoplait is a sugar bomb.

Kraft cracker barrel cheese squares are thick squares and my DD likes them. Trader joes also sells cheddar cheese squares pre-sliced. Both varieties come in rectangular packages similar to a brick of cheese. Giant also has a store-brand presliced cheese but my DD didn't like the taste.

Wash out the empty cartoon yogurt containers and put the good yogurt in them.

Put everything else on dishes so she doesn’t see the packaging.

A 5%ile kid can handle some yoplait. Or try honey on full-fat yogurt.

My 2 year old gets two slices of butter per day from the stick. He picks up the pats and eats them, then proceeds to eat his toast. Ah, youth.

Here’s my suggestions (also the parent of a kid who was in the lower weight percentiles). If your kid can discern the difference between brands, it is admittedly much harder to transition.
Hummus snack containers: either wash and refill the container or buy a new “special” container that she assists in selecting (choice a or b?) to refill
Yogurt/gogurt: they have reusable zipzicles which are the same style as the gogurt squeeze yogurts. Have her help fill them with a yogurt she’ll eat using a funnel (sounds a lot less messy than it is! Bonus! You can leave enough air space to freeze them and you can wash and reuse. You could start with the gogurt ones to fill the new ones, but gradually switch out to the brand you want.
