Kick, Kay, Kate, or what the heck

Both my grandmother and DH's mother were/are named Katherine as well as my aunt and various other relatives on both sides. My grandma's nickname was Kick and Dh's mother only goes by Kay (never Katherine). DH really likes Kick because he thinks it's spunky. I like it but I sort of swoon over Kay. We've also thought about using Kate/Katie but neither of us is in love with that and we don't want a name that is 'just fine'. I know a lot of people say you should just name your kid what you will call them but I want her to have a functional professional name and Kick just doesn't fit the bill. Does anyone have thoughts on Kick vs Kay or if they are both just toxically preppy, as my sister put it?

I would name her Katherine and see what nickname develops once the baby is here and you get to know her personality.

I know Katherine and Kathleen’s that go by a nickname of Kay, Kate/Katie, Kick and Kitty. They are all older than 35 and are professional women.

I have never heard of anyone named Kick - and I LOVE it! If you are super preppy it will be like a female equivalent of Chip, Skip, Flip, Trey, Tate, etc.

I brieflfly worked in a large consulting firm in Connecticut and Long Island and met a lot of super preppy old money white dudes and they would have these snappy names like Topper or Skip and then they would send me an email and their “real” name was always something like Mortimer or Atticus or some other old family name.

I like both. There's a Kick Kennedy, named for a prior Kick Kennedy (real name Kathleen for both). My mom is a Kitty, which I also like. I would go with Kat, personally. I also know a Kath. There are tons of options.

Are you related to the Kennedy family? That was the nn that they used for Jack's sister whose name was Kathleen, not Katherine. To me, Kick is something you do not a nn or name. Name your DD Katherine and see what happens...She could be Kay or Cat! Just let it happen organically. But, I would avoid Kick.

I can't handle Kick. It's way too odd. To everyone but you, it's a random word. I would prefer Blue or Berry (if you're going the rout of words from the dictionary, as opposed to names) to the harsh sounding Kick.

I agree with PP. Name her Katherine, and pick a nickname that flows from her personality and from the name itself. If Kick rolls off your tongue, fine. But give her the option of having a real name in the future.

I’m not a fan of traditional names so if I went with that name would go with Kick. I would spell the formal name Katharine, like Katharine Hepburn.

Ha! Op, we’re dealing with the same name game. So many Katherine/Kathleen s in our grandparents generation. In my family we have a Kathleen, Catherine, Kay, Katie, 2 Kathy’s, Karen (variant of Katherine) and a Kai... my preference is to go with a Kay or Kai for our daughter.
