NYC and hotels to stay at

Anonymous
We want to go to NYC for our anniversary - a short weekend in Oct or Nov. I want to be in a hotel near everything - last time I stayed there i stayed in the theater district, but I'm open to ones elsewhere. Interested in charming hotels, not the chains, please.

It's a chain, but we absolutely love the Sofitel! We went for our anniversary as well and got a nice upgrade too! I've stayed there for work as well and had consistently great experiences. I also think it's a great location.

In July we stayed in a boutique hotel called Stay - it is right at Times Square and the bar makes great champagne cocktails! We really liked the place. The one disclaimer is that unless you upgrade, the rooms are SMALL, though I suppose that is a pretty typical NYC issue. Anyway, the website is: http://www.stayhotelny.com/

I like to stay at the Affinia hotel in Murray Hill.

Another vote for the Affinia Dumont! The only thing I didn't like about it is that since its emphasis is on health and fitness, they didn't put caffeinated coffee in the rooms. Otherwise a delightful place!

11:35 - The Affinia Dumont is on E 34th, I was recommending the Affinia Shelburne on Lexington (around 36th 37th) though the Dumont look nice, too.

Oh sorry, didn't realize there were two Affinias in Murray Hill (at least that's where they told me the Dumont was).

The Essex House or the Palace would both be nice spots to celebrate your anniversary

I love the Sherry Netherland on 5th or the St Regis.

Check out www.morgans.com -- not sure how much you want to spend -- but Morgans and the Royalton are chic boutiques. Also check out the NY Standard hotel -- incredible views -- it's in Meatpacking district near Soho and the Village.

Agree that the Palace is absolutely gorgeous and the best place I ever stayed in NY. Have stayed at the Royalton ... agree with 16:32 that it is very chic but I didn't like it at all... very, very dark, and the room was incredibly tiny. My co-worker said that she put her make-up on in the shower stall because that was the best light in the whole room she could find! It is a chain, but the Mandarin Oriental is also very nice (been to the lounge area, but haven't seen the rooms).

I just booked a 2 brdm suite/ apt from Envoy Club on 33rd & 3rd - - for $319 in October! It looks very nice and for my family of 5, we can't beat the price.
