We are scheduled to go there for spring break in 2 weeks. It sounds like we need to change our plans. What are others doing about this? Can anyone who works at State Dept weigh in on seriousness of threat? The fact they have banned US govt employees from traveling there and have closed the consulate make it seem pretty serious. |
I'm not at the state department, but here's an article with more info. Maybe you could change your hotel to Cancun proper (zona hotelera)?

Check the foreign advice from othe rcoujntries for Playa, like Canada and the UK, to see if they are warning about it too. |
Canada also just issued warning |
I suspect this could be U.S. govt backlash against mexico for political disagreements. |
Mexico has been unsafe for years. I don’t get why people still go there. So many other options. |
Because it's not unsafe in that Riviera Maya area normally. Tourism is a big source of income for Mexico, they prioritize keeping tourist zones safe. I go every year with my kids and love it. I'm sorry this threat has happened. |
OP, there have been travel warnings about Mexico for a while now. I love Cabo, but there were people gunned down on the beach there not too long ago. I don't care that it was "only a local beach" it's still too close for comfort.
If you can cancel your plans, do it. There is a reason why it costs 1/2 as much as anywhere else to go to Mexico. Don't gamble with your kids' lives. |
People go there because it's cheap. |
But there are lots of other places in the Carribbean you could go that you would love too, and have less risk. I agree most people will still be ok, but why take a chance? Lots of other nice places are happy to take your money. Plus why not try somewhere new? Mexico beaches were just meh compared to the carribbean places I’ve been. |
wow i have been to many resorts there and always felt safe and thought they were great! Did not know I was "gambling with my life." |
I agree with the PP who said people go there because it's cheap. It's also (from this area at least), relatively east to get to compared to other places in the Caribbean. I've been to Cancun twice and we liked it, but I basically felt like I was in Florida. There's not a lot of Mexican culture in the Hotel Zone. |
Go to Puerto Rico. And support our fellow Americans. |
Shoot. Was planning to go next week. Is it really that bad down there? |
What is this latest warning based on? I was aware that in the past few days/weeks, there was a prohibition from US gov. employees using the ferry to Cozumel from Playa. We were going to do that, but I figured we could just make alternate plans.
DH is a fed. I wasn't going to tell him about the ferry issue until later (and it might have been lifted by the time we were there). But, now... we have a problem! This is our big international trip with the kids! Flights are paid for. Condo is paid for. Right in Playa. I'm not going to cancel anything yet... the advisory could change by the time we plan to leave. But, dang! What a pain in the neck. I probably have to tell DH. ![]() |
