If you have a nice car, how do you replace a cracked windshield? Cheap glass or Original manuf?

Mercedes, BMW, Range Rover, etc.?

Do you pay the extra money to replace the glass with original manufacturer glass or do you just use whatever the insurance company covers?

What about if you don't plan to keep the car? Is this the type of thing people care about?

I went to the Mercedes dealer. I was probably robbed. Not sure I'd do that again.

Use who the insurance covers and what they pay for, if not, it depends on the price difference. I have liked some aftermarket better.

Do you know what kind of glass they used? Did you do it through your insurance or just pay out of pocket?

My insurance gave me a list of 10-12 shops. If I used one from the list, the insurance guaranteed it under warranty for as long as I was the owner of the car (that it was installed correctly, no leaks, etc. NOT chips/breaks). If I used a shop of my own choice not on their list, I only had whatever warranty came from the shop. I went with one off the insurance list after listening to my coworker fight with the company who did her (shoddy) replacement. But she used one those that come and replace it while you car is in the parking lot at work.

Call safelite auto glass and they will replace it with what you have.
I have a Land Rover with a heated windshield.
Nearest dealer is 2 hrs away.
Safelite ordered what was needed, came out, installed it.

Your insurance deductible for glass coverage may or may not be more or less than the replacement cost.
I ended up paying out of pocket for it.

Used safelite- who my insurance also uses. No cost for me (insurance). Windshield was exactly the same.

I save a fair amount of money each month by not having "glass coverage" on my insurance.

When I need a windshield replacement, my local mechanic lets me know when the glass guy is coming around, usually weekly, and we put in the order. It might cost $150 all said and done.

Don't insure things that are not a hardship to replace. That's for suckers. And don't ever buy the "extended warranty." Same principle.

No deductible?

I don't think anyone is understanding my question, but I guess that's ok as it sounds like everyone is using aftermarket glass. I've "heard" that aftermarket isn't as good as it might not work with sensors within the windshield or might not be cut to exact specifications.

I have a good relationship with my dealership rep, and he told me the name of the glass guy they use. No dealership has their own glass guy. They outsource and then mark it up.

I'm assuming if you paid nothing out of pocket then you did not use Original Equipment glass, which would probably not be covered since it's more expensive.

Thank you.

Our vehicles have never been quite as high-end as what you’re describing, but they do have the features like the rain sensors. The state where we live and you can’t get glass coverage, so DH has called every glass shop in town and we’ve gone with the cheapest one every time. Safelite is more than twice as much as the place we go to. I’m on my third or fourth windshield, so it’s not worth it to spend any more than we have to.

Your insurance will replace it with the same quality, but it won't be OEM.

I posted above. I had the choice to use OEM or after market. I paid the difference between the glass company and insurance price.

In some cases with rain sensors and forward cameras, you can only do OEM glass. But because of insurance insanity, Safelite was required to replace with non-OEM, and when that failed (the car wouldn't even drive because sensors in windshield were reporting faults), they got approval to do OEM.

I used a local mom and pop and they did an AWESOME job. It's been 4 years and the windshield still looks brand new.
