Pepperoni and Capicola Ham Subs still considered lunch meat or deli meat?

Anonymous
I always get the Napoli from Italian Store but do I need to start heating it?

Yes I think they are considered lunch meats. Any cold meat should be heated for the safest consumption. But of more concern to me would be the nitrates in pepperoni. Now, risk of listeria in cold meat is not high, but if you are concerned, then yeah it counts.

Yes. Heat them for listeria concerns.

Of course they are. Plus, not only do you have to worry about listeria, but nitrates as well. Surely you can find a way to eat something else?

I ate that exact sandwich every few weeks during my pregnancy. I even have pictures of eating one in L&D triage when I was waiting for a room. FWIW, I stayed away from queso blanco and a few other high listeria risk foods, but deli meat is not actually any higher risk than salad greens or other things that are commonly eaten.

Yes, but the risk from cured lunch meat is even lower than the risk from uncured lunch meat.

A place like the Italian store that has super high turnover of meat is really not any more of a concern than salad greens or other fresh or frozen fruits and veggies.

Listeria is highly unlikely. Even in deli meat. No one tells pregnant women to stop eating spinach or cantaloupe.

I ate it lunch meat with both pregnancies. There is risk there. It's just a TEENY TINY SAND GRAIN ON A BEACH type of risk.

One of my doctors said I would need to eat a lot of it to affect myself or baby. So if you keep it to one small sandwich / little bit of meat, you’re fine.

I ate all sorts of nitrate-filled meats during my first pregnancy and my DD was fine. I obviously didn't eat it constantly, but I never restricted myself. But I always heated everything just in case.

There's a woman who used to post on here (not sure if she does anymore) whose baby died in utero from listeria poisoning.

You can get food poisoning from just about anything- ice cream, lettuce, fast food, you name it. If you want lunch meat, eat away!

Just eat it. I think the concern about listeria in lunchmeat is silly. You're much more likely to get it from a salad or other foods.

And I wouldn't worry about nitrates, unless you're eating hot dogs for lunch and dinner daily.

+1

I recall salads and other types of products being recalled recently because of listeria. Not lunch meats. I would go ahead and eat whatever you want to eat in moderation and not worry about those things.

Listeria is serious business, but you are more likely to get it from a salad bar than deli meat. I would eat the sandwich if you are craving one.
