So...... my best friends D called over to the admissions of a school she is really anxious to get into (first choice) and wanted to confirm they had gotten some materials sent over so she is chatting with a rep or secretary and at the end the lady says " (daughters name), we look forward to officially welcoming you soon and see you in the fall" then catches herself and quickly tries to cover her tracks by saying something really generic but friends D said it was obvious she knew she goofed and felt really thrown off by it as she said she kind of gasped after she said it.
My friend called excited as I don't blame her, I wonder how often this kind of thing happens!! I wish it would happen to my S haha. Just though I would share and wonder how often this might happen |
| A friends daughter deferred at Notre Dame was told she was admitted when she called admissions office to check on status - I guess it is not too much of a big deal - decision was made. Congrats to your friends daughter. |
| Nothing is official until the letter (or email) arrives. I would tell my kid to be really hopeful but to keep it to herself. Walking back news like this would be humiliating. |

I hate to say this, but it's possible that this the speaker's goof was not that she inadvertently tipped off the child that she was accepted, but simply that she said anything at all. It might have just automatically come out of her mouth without knowing whether the kid was accepted or not.
I agree with PP not to count on it. |
| I agree that the goof could have been implying she was accepted when the secretary didn't know for sure. |
| This goes back 20 years to when I was applying to colleges. I applied to a school that required a portfolio submission if you were applying to the school of architecture. I did not have one and had filled out the form requesting a waiver. Long story short I did not get accepted. I got accepted at other schools and had moved on. Then a month later I get a call from the alumni committee from said school. They were calling to inform me that I had be selected for the Alumni Scholarship which would cover full tuition!! I explained that I did not get accepted to the school. It took about a week for them to sort out the problems and then they called be back to say that they were wrong. It was horrible. So mistakes do happen. Hopefully you will get confirmation of the good news shortly. |
Update - said child has been officially accepted into the school with which this mishap (a happy one) occurred! So happy mistakes do happen

| I remember my high school pal got a call from the college's tennis coach saying she was excited for her to join and what the practice schedule would be. Friend got a letter later saying she wasn't admitted. That was awful. |
Was this from this year’s RD round? Because I don’t think Notre Dame is expected to release regular decisions before March 19th. |
You're mixing up two different posters. |
| My daughter was called by a coach who told her she would be admitted. |
