Is the admittance rate at Sidwell for K really this low?

Anonymous
We are waitlisted for Sidwell for K, a few friends who applied were rejected outright. I have heard through the grapevine that they got an unprecedented number of applicants for K this year, roughly 250 for 24 spots. If that's true, that's a 10% admittance rate!! That's worse than most colleges! Curious if this is true or just an exaggeration.

About 4-5 years ago, I got hold of some info about application numbers there, and the result I calculated was less than 10% rate for Pk and K, and that's before setting aside some of those spots for siblings. It's daunting.

Yikes! Are GDS and Maret as bad, does anyone know?

Is preK at these schools just as tough to get in?

Even tougher at Maret. After sinking and teacher’s kid preferences, there are often less than 3 I 4spots for K. Maret does not have a pre-K.

Yes, Sidwell generally receives about 10 complete applications for every spot they have.

GDS parent here. Two years ago they showed at the State of the School some info about the number spots available over the number of applicants per grade. Contrary to what I thought, from all “entry grades”, Pre-K is the toughest grade to get in (10% or less), followed by K.

Thanks for this info -- what were the numbers for applicants to 3rd grade?

DC needs more private schools because the public school choices range from OK to terrible. If you live in DC, and can afford it, you know you will have to send your kid to -private. We did. Kid didn't get off of GDS wait list fast enough, and we had already signed a contract for a MD private

Thank you for the gratuitous bashing of DC public schools. Your wish is being granted by that huge private school that is going in at Connecticut and Van Ness with a sister school in China.

This post is poorly informed and also in very poor taste. DCPS has some good schools. Ah, shucks, you didn't make it off the wait list. What a loss for us!

It will be great to have an option that isn't 100% Play-based "education".

British School and WIS actually are a good mix of play plus learning plus high expectations of students.

NP. DCPS has quite a few good elementary schools. However, I would only consider sending the kids to Deal for MS and Walls or Wilson for HS. Some of the better charter schools have English/Math proficiency % rates in the 40s. Some people are comfortable with that, I am not.
