I feel like I've just written my own appraisals for years now and bosses have signed off on it. It's like I've never been given legitimate review of my performance and it's kind of a bummer. Anyone else in that boat?
Our process is we have to write up our accomplishments and value added and self rate and the manager has to also write & rate, it's pretty equal in terms of division of labor.
I write what I did and my manager basically summarizes it and assigns a numerical rating. When I get my work product back I can tell whether I did a good job or not based upon how many revisions there are so the review process doesn't add much value for me.
We write our own appraisal and boss signs off, asking some commentary and rating us.
We don't get to write any personal assessment, our boss writes and assess us without any input from us. Its sucks and is totally up to his mood and feelings, we rarely get any mid-point review to know where things stand, any setting of goals or expectations are again handled entirely by the boss with no input or willingness from boss on changing them or allowing for feedback. Yes, we've complained to HR and we've talked to him.
I write a pretty robust self-assessment and that becomes ~75% of my review. The rest is from peer input.
