Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
| I overheard someone saying that there's a lot of evidence countering the conventional wisdom of babies sleeping on their tummies causing SIDS. He was saying that those studies didn't control for things like drug use by parents, having tons of blankets, family beds, etc. He also said that there are other studies showing that sleeping on the stomach is actually better. Does anyone know anything about this contrary evidence? |
| The only thing I know is that I've always sleep on my stomach, since I was first born. So have my brother and sister. So has my daughter. Nobody has ever had any problems and I firmly believe that if an infant can turn his head, he will not suffocate unless something else is wrong. |

There's no actual proof on this, these are all numbers.
zillions of babies back home sleep on their tummies with blankies and stuff all over the cribs and the numbers in sids back home are not bigger. |

I always feel that the biggest problem with stomach sleeping are the toxins in toxic mattresses, esp brand new ones. Smell for yourself. If I had my face in that, I would get sick.
I think you need to do your research (as you are) and then do what's best for your own child. To me, that's what being a parent is all about. Good luck to you. |
| numbers don't lie. i don't have them at hand, but you can look them up. since the campaign to get babies off their tummies, the cases of babies dying from SIDS has dramatically fallen. make of it what you will. what can you live with? |
Yeah, but with that came awareness of sleeping habits in general, awareness of the importance of prenatal care, of not smoking during pregnancy and around a newborn... I think all that plays a factor when we look at the numbers. I think all that plays a much bigger role than putting an infant in a position or another in the crib. |
| eh, put the kid on his/her back. can't hurt, might help. if the kid won't sleep ANYWHERE but on the tummy, go for it. |
What she said. |
| OP, do you want your DC to sleep on his stomach, does he already, or are you just curious and seeking more information? My DC has slept on his stomach since he could roll over (around 2 mo). I figure if he can get himself into this position, then he'll be fine. Plus, he's been sleeping like a champ since he started sleeping on his stomach, and who's going to argue with that? |

SIDS Mom
I know of several guilt ridden families who put baby to sleep on stomach (before capable of rolling over him/her self) and found them dead The SIDS rate dropped dramatically, down by about 50% in the US, after the back to sleep campaign. We weren't the first country to change the recommendation for back to sleep. Every country that has had a campaign like that has had similar drop in SIDS rate. |
where can i check this info? |
| I know several parents who let their babies (under age of 3 months, and not rolling over) sleep on their tummies. They make sure that there's nothing in the crib, and watch vigilently on the baby monitor. This definitely helps babies get mobile faster. my DD has been a back sleeper and didn't roll over until she was 8 months old. She is now 10 months and still isn't crawling and hates tummy time. The tummy sleepers I knew were rolling and crawling much earlier. And, they don't have the bald spot that DD still has! |
I'm so sorry for your loss. |

If you're going to put your baby to sleep on his tummy, please turn a fan in the room.
