Disputing Uber “cleaning fee”

Anonymous
Totally bogus $160 cleaning fee tacked onto an Uber ride. Driver reported spilled food and has a picture. We didn’t have food and didn’t spill anything. But Uber is turning a deaf ear to our complaint (emails and automated answers from Uber at this point). Any tips to getting the charge refunded?

Dispute with credit card. You will win.

I would make them go through every person they gave? a ride to that day, if you can get through to them. My husband signed up for Lyft ( why, I don't know, because he never has time to do it, so we just drive around with the stickers on our car), and on the very few times he's given rides, he sees what they have in their hands. He actually gets out and helps them load things into the car (groceries, etc.), so he's well aware of what they have with them. If they have a drink in hand, he'll tell them they can bring down the console between the back seats so they don't have to hold it. We also have a 12 yr old boy. If we have a random spill, it's probably from our kid, and it certainly doesn't cost $160 to clean. You're definitely being taken.

What does this mean? Get someone to admit they spilled their carry out?
$160 is a “standard” cleaning fee according to Uber.

Tell them they’re not authorized to charge your account. I don’t think they can if you say that. Zipcar tried to charge me for a dent I had nothing to do with and I told them they’re not authorized to debit my checking account $700 (which I didn’t even have in my acct at the time) and they dropped it.

Apparently you sign a preauthirization when you sign up for Uber. Of course, that’s assuming you did something requiring the cleaning fee. I have no idea what the Uber dispute process is.
