If you and spouse both work out

How do you juggles kids / work / schedules if you and your spouse both work out?

DH usually works out 4x a week or so - both wknd days and an average of two evenings a week.
I feel like if I were to try to add in my own workouts we would be too busy / never have time together / never be able to do anything.

DH also leaves for work at 6:30am so if I wanted to do mornings it would have to be 5:30-6:30am and I am just not a morning person :-/

I work out at home. Find a program like Tracy Andersen or something like that which you can do on a yoga mat at home with some basic equipment.

We stagger. I WAH, so I go to the nearby gym at what would otherwise be a commuting time (5-6). We still have childcare at this hour. DH bought a gym-quality elliptical, and he works out at night.

There are only so many hours in the day, and in your situation it sounds like a home gym is your best bet. Not ideal, but better than nothing. I lost all the baby weight from my first doing Jillian Michaels videos at home, so it is possible to get a decent workout with minimal equipment at home if you really try.

The easy solution is for you to each get a weekend day and trade off weekdays. That would probably mean that he might only get 2 or 3 workout days a week and so would you.

But for this to work you need a partner who’s not selfish and you need to not be a doormat.

Go at the same time to a place with childcare.

Make it a family affair and walk with the kids after dinner. Not far, just around your block.

Bought a Peloton.

My kids are older now, so it's not a problem, but when they were younger, I did work out at home (or out for a run) between 5:30 and 6:30 (now I do it from 6 to 6:45 so I can be done in time to make sure they're up and getting ready for school before I start getting ready for work). Not being a morning person is a pretty lame excuse.

Is there a gym at your workplace? That has been a life saver for me as a single mom. My company also gives us a few hours of “gym time” per week, so I make a point of using it (and we can sign up for free personal training which is amazing).

He belongs to a gym near his office and goes at lunch. I get up at 5:30, or wait until 8.

But here’s a secret: no one is excited to go work out at the crack of dawn, especially at first.

We both workout 6 days a week.

I go to OTF 2xs a week at lunch at work (OTF is steps from my office), and then I work out at my home gym the rest of the time, usually in the mornings at 530, one day I WFH.

I love our home gym, saves so much time. I have a rower, treadmill, free weights, a bench, bands, balls, bosu, plyo box, yoga mat and an an wheel. I can do everything at home i can do at a fancy gym.

We both go during our lunch breaks. Neither of us work out in the weekends or evenings.

We both do a combo of early mornings and lunch breaks. I go to bed at 9am, often before my 12yr old. No way am I taking time out of our family time for exercise or would I entertain using the gym daycare after a long day at daycare.

Why can’t you also workout in the weekends (both days) at a different time than he does?

I have to admit...I was guilty of this too. My spouse doesn’t really work out but does like to sleep in on the weekends. After a while I just decided his choices didn’t need to negatively impact my choices. I let him know I’m planning to go. And then I go. I try not to go at the crack of dawn. And if I have the option to do it at a time that means he still gets to sleep on I will do it. But I no longer ignore my own needs/choices simply because he has different ones.

You both should be able to figure out how to workout on the two weekend days. Then you figure out which two week days work for you. Utilize babysitters if that makes it work.

What time do you leave for work? What time do you and DH get back from work?
