Will FCPS participate in the nationwide walkout by teachers and students regarding school safety and guns? I'd like to know more about who is supporting this effort before giving my child the okay to participate. I don't have a problem with it after school, but not during the school day where kids may feel manipulated to participate. And I'm concerned that if FCPS supports this, it will be the beginning of future walk-outs for any and every future societal grievance. Thoughts? |
fcps never does any walk outs |
When are these walkouts and how long do they last? |
Yeah. Not every cause du jour relates to events that leave dozens, if not hundreds, of dead schoolchildren every year. The youth are taking matters into their own hands because old white men paid off by the NRA will not. |
The info circulating at our FCPS high school is for a walkout to demand new gun laws on 4/20. |
I bet the SB talks about it on Thursday. McElveen already has another resolution. He's big into resolutions.

Isn't 4/20 the day pot supporters do their thing? I thought the walkout was in March too. |
4/20 is the anniversary of the Columbine HS massacre. |
3/14 is the planned walkout, 10am |
OP here. Sorry I didn't mean to be cavalier with the word "grievance." Of course this is in a far different category. |
There seem to be 2 dates circulating. I’m not sure why. |
Can you walk out of school on a Saturday, and the first day of spring break? |
This is a Saturday |
The march on the mall is March 24. The walkout for schools is earlier --- 3/14. |
OP, given you have the date wrong I recommend you talk with your kid first about what he or she may be interested in doing. You may be a little ahead of him/her.
There is a walk out 3/14 organized by the Women's March, to last 17 minutes. I don't know how many kids know/care about that one. There is a student-led protest march being organized for Saturday, 3/24. There is a student-organized high school walk out 4/20, the anniversary of the Columbine shooting. No time or length set yet, that I've seen. I am guessing (don't know, just reasonable guess) that FCPs will "allow" walking out by not punishing it. I would be shocked if FCPS actually facilitated or encouraged it. |
