How far in advance should I plan?

I have a one year old boy and my husband and I just moved to Rockville a few months ago. I was recently asked what schools waiting lists have I put my child on. My answer , none. I didn't know I needed to be thinking about this yet. My husband and I are from Upstate NY where the public schools are excellent. Everyone sends their children to the schools in the district where they live. My husband and I are also renting and looking to buy. Does anyone have any idea about good places in Rockville to live, near good public schools; and how long in advance I need to be thinking if we decide to send our child to private?

people are probably asking if you have your child on a waiting list for a pre-school, not for elementary school. many pre-schools follow the academic year calendar and you'll need to get applications in the fall before you want your child to go to pre-school. that said, i think pre-schools in the district are harder to get into than those a bit farther out...

i'm not sure if/when you want your child to start pre-school if he's not already in a daycare that becomes a preshool for the older kids. you're probably fine.
