What's is the point of this ?

I can understand if a student is late to school they need to go to the Office and check in, but if a student is late to a class doing the school day they have to go to the office to check in??

DS said he spend 5-10 minutes in the office because he was late 7th period the other day. It was his first tardy he ever had for that class, he understands he was late but he was only about 10 seconds late.

Why does a student have to the office when they are late to class? I can understand if they are late everyday but just one tardy I don't get it. Does your DC High school have this policy?

Former high school teacher here. This seems like a situation where the teacher should have handled things differently. If I had a student who was not generally late and came 10 seconds late once, I wouldn’t send them to the office. The office also wouldn’t expect me to waste their time on something like this. There are rules and then there is the humane enforcement of those rules. It sounds like the teacher and/or the school doesn’t understand this difference.

Yeah, I'm guessing OP's son was either 1) not "10 secs late," 2) this was far from his first offense, or 3) he was obnoxious about it -- like, hanging out outside the classroom and bursting in at the last minute.

Seems unlikely any teacher would bust someone in February who has been on time all year. Sorry, OP; I don't buy your kid's story.

Maybe the school is concerned about student safety? I know that my son's summer camp takes attendance and immediately notifies the main office if a camper doesn't show up to his designated activity.

Not normal, but unless it happens again, I would let it go.

OP, your title "What is the point of this?" is perfect. What is the point of discussing this here on DCUM. You should be talking to the teacher instead.
