States around the country are dropping or majorly adapting the very flawed PARCC tests...
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-met-no-more-parcc-20180207-story.html http://www.nj.com/politics/index.ssf/2018/01/murphy_says_nj_will_soon_end_parcc_testing.html Please, DC, drop these annoying, flawed tests!! I wish it would stop them this coming year, as my youngest enters 3rd. The prepping for the test b/c way too consuming at the expensive of a much better educational experience for the kids! |
| Before PARCC, it was CAS. After PARCC, it will be something else. The problem is not with the specific test, but with the excessive testing culture in general. |
And every time we change, we lose the ability to track longitudinal data for a period of years. Not to mention the expense. |
|
If Illinois -- home of Arne Duncan -- is about to dump PARCC, it's over.
I agree with OP's criticism of PARCC; we shouldn't continue to administer PARCC just for the sake of...continuity. |
| Was CTBS maybe 10-20 years ago. |
| I agree. They'll dump it and get something equally useless. We spend way too much time teaching to the test as it is. I've had many classroom evaluations that mention that I wasted too much class time by going over "remedial" skills with only X days until the PARCC. |
|
I don't mind the test, but there shoudln't be a need for test prep. Students just take the test whenever it comes up and the test prep is whatever they learned that year.
The time becomes more valuable in high school and shouldn't be wasted on test prep. In elementary school you have plenty of time to have classroom time and test time. |

I used to be a fan of limited standardized testing. I grew up taking the Iowa test of basic skills. I believe in data, and while there are variables (some kids don't test well, etc), and teaching to he test is an issue, it seems like getting longitudinal data is a good thing.
And then I learned about PARCC - the contracts, the developers - and how it was implemented in DCPS - online only, in schools without good online service, essay questions to be typed by third graders ,etc. And I took a few sample PARCC questions, with the split screens, the scrolling. ..... and I think PARCC is really, really dreadful. And how it is implemented in DC is beyond bad. |
this is a very non-realistic view of the current state of public education. if there is a test and teachers' and administrators' jobs and pay are tied to student performance, then there will be nothing but test prep. |
+1. |
| How would DCUM parents pick schools if it weren't for test scores? |
Based on the number of white kids, of course. |
Race and FARMs like they do now |
| Agree. |
Funny part is all the poor kids complain when they are by themselves and complain even louder when they get company. Like anybody is listening |
