Buying airline tickets for kids separately?

Anonymous
We're planning to take the kids back to see their grandparents across country for the Summer. 2 kids under 9. If we buy tickets on United, do we have to buy all their tickets separately (logging into each of their united accounts and paying for them)? I remember creating a united number for them a couple years ago, but didn't have to use it as we had enough miles to cover back then. Or am I able to buy all their tickets logging into my united account and adding their united numbers so they get milage credit for it? As the kids get older I think we'll end up going more places eventually and would like to start them off with a good points program. Any suggestions welcome!

Also, is it too early to book for Aug?

You an add the kids and their FF#, global ID #, passport # etc to their profile under your account.

Just a heads up on FF miles that United, and some of the others, expire the miles after 18 months if the account hasn't had some activity. So if you aren't traveling on United once every 18 months you can lose the miles. There are things you can do (donate 1000 miles, etc) that keep it active but you have to pay attention.

FF accounts aren't limited to one. My kids have accounts on United, American, Delta and jetBlue. It's taking a heck of a long time to build up points though, and no free tickets from their accounts yet.

Yikes! I'm hoping to not spread too thin, but find a couple airlines that will provide decent coverage and prices to NA, Asia and Europe.
