iready winter math score is lower than fall score - how?

Anonymous
DS's iready winter math score is 10 points lower than his fall score was. Is it the same test? How does this happen? My kid knew more during the summer than he did after 5 mos of school?!?!?!?!?

Maybe he rushed?

Teacher sucks

He rushed through it because he was allowed to work play games at the end. Or at least that is what my kid admitted to doing.

It’s a totally stupid assessment. Please do not put any stock in it. I swear it’s a scam. The scores are depressed so that everyone freaks out and then buys the even more stupid online “interventions.” Because that’s what kids need to be doing...spending more time on some stupid computer interventions.

We don't have the online interventions.

The students took i-Ready in the fall. They took it again this winter. That's about it. End of story.

Not yet... it’s a product that the iReady folks would like schools in FCPS to purchase. Some have them as a “pilot.” They were supposed to be included this year when iReady was introduced, but principals shut it down.

My DS’s were also lower. I assumed he rushed or that it is not a great test because I definitely see progress in the day to day work he brings home. I’m not concerned and didn’t share the results with my child.

It's a long and boring test and my son has a history of rushing to play the game. They notice it the first time, so for the second assessment they slow him down and his scores shoot up. Then by the 3rd assessment they don't keep an eye on him and next thing they know he is playing the game and his scores dropped like the stock market.

How were the scores initially? Often if they are on or above level you don't see much growth and scores can evewn drop because the school focuses on bringing the low ones up.

In winter and fall they were both above grade level. He's in 5th grade AAP and in the fall his teacher said they should be above grade level beause he's doing 6th grade math and language arts. So while they were both above grade level I just don't understand it they dropped after 5 mos of school.

My 2nd grader's math score dropped too. I was wondering if it's the same test or a different one to reflect new material they've learned?

Although, if they can play games on the computer when they are done that pretty much explains it to me. My son would be all about that and not care at all about the test.

It's the same test each time. Maybe different questions, but same levels. Is the teacher new and/or does the teacher have a reputation of not being effective? Does your child have any attention issues or anxiety?

The test is adaptive, meaning subsequent questions depend on how you answered previous questions, so it is possible he got hung up on a question or two and it sent him down a different path. There is a margin of error with these things, but scores getting lower probably indicates at the very least not much progress made. I'd talk to the teacher.

It's the same test. Lots and lots of kids did worse this time around. We're a pilot school for the math lessons and they are SO sick of iReady. It's the same test as fall and it's really long (60-90 mins average) and the kids just blow it off, so it's not an accurate assessment. Franky it's a HUGE waste of instructional time and if I was a parent I'd be raising hell about how much time is wasted.

Yes to this. Parents, please complain to your region assistant superintendent. Principals and teachers will thank you. And most importantly, your kid will thank you.
