Buying car from a family member out of state?

Anonymous
My father would like to sell his car to us. It is currently registered out of state and we live in Maryland. Any insight on what we need to do?

Not much. Have him sign the title over. My Dad gave us a car. We had to pay a few hundred in transfer taxes at the DMV but it was really easy to do.

Depending on how old the car is, you will need to get a notarized bill of sale to have the $1 sales price be honored for the taxes. Otherwise, they will look to the blue book value. It is all laid out pretty clearly on the MD MVA website.

I did this about a year ago and it wasn't hard if you followed the steps.

Did this a few years back. Make sure you get temp plates before you get the actual car, if possible. Our new car was all the way in Wisconsin and our relative told us to do this first (we are in DC proper) just to make sure everything was figured out before we drove it the 20-some hours back to DC.

Not if it is a gift from a family member. That’s also laid out pretty clearly on the same site....
