I was excited about all of the talk and I looked at my paycheck today only to find out the my employer withheld MORE!
I clearly need to call my payroll to understand what happened. Anyone else? |

Mine- there is one bracket that did increase. My withholding is greater now than it was last year, even with a notable raise. I was 33% before and under new tax code am 35%. BUT, i anticipate I will be ultimately paying less in taxes overall because I used to get slammed by AMT before but should now avoid it.
To be clear, i used to owe several thousand at the end of the year due to AMT. Since AMT hits me in the fourth quarter between 4Q salary and my year end bonus, i dont withhold for the AMT amount- i just pay expected taxes the first week in January to cover the AMT amount. If I withheld extra year-round for AMT, then my withholding would have gone down. |
| Mine also went up. Single mom of 2 (so head of household) making <$70/year. I need to figure out if I should change my withholdings |
| The new Form W-4 and withholding calculator should be finalized and released later this month. I would wait until it is out before adjusting your withholdings. And I wouldn't necessarily trust that the new withholding amounts are correct - there are a lot of new variables in calculating taxes for 2018, so I'd recommend waiting for the new W-4 and then run an estimate of your taxes before adjusting withholding. It will still be early enough in the year to help you get the right amounts withheld overall. |
What were your exemptions? I was claiming 2 for state and federal and file HoH for one child and make 84K. My net increased $94/check. |
