Back splash - keep 4 inch granite from builder and add tile on top later?

Did anyone do this and how did it look? It is a new build and this way to keep cost downs and then less tile materials later? Thoughts

Personally I think the granite backsplash looks terrible, and especially so with tile over it. If you don’t want to do tile now (or don’t know what you want to do) why don’t you just not do the granite up the wall and do plain counters? I’m confused by how *more* granite would save you money over a reasonable tile - can you ask them to make a swap or get some credit?

I hate the 4 inch lip. I think it looks cheap.

nooo do not do this ... if you are definitely putting up back splash it should go down to the counter and not have a granite lip. We made this mistake and found ourselves ripping out the 4" lip after the fact.

Do not put the granite lip! Just have the backsplash painted with a semi-gloss/washable paint for now and then tile when you have the money.

You can tile later and remove it. I'd leave it.

Op here. Won't it provide some protection against water until I have time and money to do it later?

How long are you planning to wait until you have it tiled? I agree that having the granite with tile on top looks bad. We moved into a new build about a year ago and asked them to leave the 4 inch granite off. The design assistant knew from this request that we were just going to have the backsplash done later. From her reaction, I don't think it's uncommon. We didn't wait very long though, maybe a couple of months.

No lip. Looks awful!

Yes, its a good idea. We did 3 inches instead of 4. 10 years later we still haven't tiled.

Don't do it. It's an outdated look. We just had them take ours off a few months ago when we redid the entire backsplash on our home we bought last summer. It looks so much better and I gained a slight amount of counter space.
