given the opportunity? Yu Ying or Montessori DCPS. Yes, before it is asked, my pre-k has the choice of both at this late date. Whichever is chosen he will not have the opportunity of the other if the chosen one is not a successful match. I know that Yu Ying does not have a track record yet in the AYP, so I don't actually know about their academics, but . . . It's so rare when you actually have good choices to make regarding DC public education. I have less than 24 hours to make a decision and DH response is, well just make a decision. Duh!! |
Mastery of a second language is *very* important to me, so I'd choose Yu Ying. |
Hi, I'm a Yu Ying parent, and I LOVE the school.
I hope you see this message soon. Your timing is very fortunate. Yu Ying's "Back to School Night" is tonight at 7pm at the school. You can come by and listen to the English and Chinese teachers talk to the new Pre-K parents about what their children have been doing for the past 2 weeks! You can also find out more details of the program and meet the families who currently attend. I could go on, but really it makes more sense for you to come to the school and see and hear it in person. Plus, you can probably find some Kindergarten parents and ask them to tell you their opinion of the program one year in. Good luck. I hope this message gets to you in time. |
Two very different types of schools and programs. I guess you should think about how your child would do in each environment and what goals you have for your child. I have always found making a list of the strengths and weaknesses of each option is helpful.
FWIW, I have two children at Yu Ying and I love the school and the program. |
So OP, did you make it to the Back-to-School night? It was standing room only! The meal vendor was there with a sample of the food they're doing. There was information on the aftercare program. But, of course the star of the show was the program itself: Yu Ying just won the FLAP grant! $300K per year for the next three years to developing an innovative foreign language program! And there was discussion of the IB Curriculum as well. Wasn't it nice that every single teacher got a round of applause? I enjoyed listening to the English and Chinese teachers in the breakout sessions talk about the daily schedules: they sure do cover an impressive amount of material, yet it's so well-planned and the integration and teamwork between the classes is amazing. Even though we've already been at the school for a year, I came away impressed. Yet again. |
Go with YuYing!!!! |
can you say more about montessori dcps? not familiar with it.
we were faced with a similar decision recently--solid dcps v. solid charter. we went charter. |
OP here. We chose Yu Ying. Far too many political distrations for DCPS. Yu Ying is a young school, and I can only pray that what they offer does not turn out to be like a snake oil salesman. |
Good choice! Hope to see you at the class potluck and the next Parent Association meeting! |
