ONLINE (during school year) Pre-calc

Anonymous
My DC has just started registration for courses next year at her HS. Do you recommend or not recommend taking an online general Pre-calc class during the school year? Tutor can be provided if need be. Would like to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

What grade is she in and what kind of math student is she? If she's taking it online to get ahead a year in math she should know that it's not very rigorous. It's also not very time consuming, so if that's what she's looking for, that may be a plus. If she wants to take it because she hates math and wants to fill up her regular schedule with AP art classes as a senior, this is probably the class for her.

My kid took it in the last couple of years. There were 10 homework problems per week. It was a strange mix of kids in the class - 8th graders through seniors. My kid (who is not at all math-y) took it as a senior and ended up having to take a one-credit trig class in college after taking a placement test.

Also depends on which school. If at TJ, no way..

She's not taking it to get ahead. She's not "math-y" either. She is taking it to make room for another class that she enjoys. Do you think it is considered more rigorous to take it in school as oppose to online during the school year?

I think an online class taken during the school year shows up as a regular class on the transcript. It won't look less rigorous.

This is a very hard class, even not honors is really hard. Why do you think your kid can manage an extra class?

You should ask the teacher how many hours it would add to her weekly homework.

That would be the issue with my son - he has no problem understanding supposedly difficult lessons, but takes a long time to do the work. Low processing speed.

What about online dating PE?

Taking it pass fail is really easy.

online PE is not really easy, at least if you do it in the summer (I don't know anyone who has taken it during the school year).

It is extremely easy to cheat on online math courses. There are websites out there where you can literally plug in the problem and it provide you with the step by step solution. So it's easy for students to pass line math courses without ever really learning the material.

If this is the last STEM class your DC will EVER take, then maybe consider it. If not, then she really needs to learn the fundamentals and also learn to get by without plugging everything into wolfram alpha

The extra class she is adding is photography. She enjoys it and it wont add to to her course load. Which is why she wants to take online math, to give her the room to take something she likes.

You can't cheat because there is an in-person midterm and final. Quizzes given (if any) are timed, so you really don't have time to look around, search and plug in numbers. Midterm and final is worth a lot...so if you dont know your material you will fail.

Don’t do it. My kid is taking an online math class and we are very dissatisfied. It in no way resembles a classroom experience.

That is incorrect. Online classes have a in-person midterm and final.
