Karyotype test vs. other genetic testing?

Anonymous
Does anyone know exactly what karyotyping tests are? My RE said it was a simple blood test. What does it test and what are the results like? Also, is the difference between karyotyping and other genetic tests that karyotyping looks at a broad range of DNA and genetic tests are more targeted? Any other info - cost, insurance coverage - would also be appreciated.

A karyotype is a test to identify and evaluate the size, shape, and number of chromosomes in a sample of body cells. Extra, missing, or abnormal positions of chromosome pieces can cause problems with fertility. When we were undergoing IF testing, our RE recommended a karyotype for my husband due to severe male factor infertility. I'm pretty sure it was covered by insurance (although it might have been covered under the infertility benefit, which covers less than the regular medical benefit - I don't remember exactly). It is just a blood test.
