Hi,
At what age do children learn their colors? Can say a color and then point to a color? Many thanks |
| My son was about two. |
|
I think the books say between 2 and 3. I was surprised; I thought it would be younger.
DS didn't know all of them until after he was 2. At first I was worried he was color blind. DD knew them at 19 months. |

Thank you for the responses! My son started to say blue earlier this week and point to blue. last night he walked into his room and pointed at his crib sheet and said yellow (and it was a yellow sheet).
He is 18 months old and I didn't see anything in the books yet about this. |
| for awhile my son said everything was red (including snow!) he thought he was funny. i think he knew the colors by the time before he was 2. can't quite remember. |
| 18 months-2 |
| around 2 or a little later. I think it depends on how verbal your child is too. It helped that we had rainbow colored dots on some crib things too. |
and he was right. he sounds hilarious and fun! |
| DD just turned 2 and for the past 2 months or so she has been able to identify and say all of her primary colors and some others such as black, white, pink, etc. |
|
My twins who are now 2.5 know their colors. Twin A learned his colors at about 17 months. We would point out and he would say, blue. He was and still is way more verbal than Twin B. Twin B just got them down a couple of months ago.He is just now really talking.
So, it totally depends on the child. |
| I am a bit confused, these responses make it seem like kids learn color spontaneously. Like every thing else it has to be taught, if your kid is verbal and you start pointing out color, they will likely pick it up in no time. There is no magic age. |
| I have a DC who is 3.5 and still has a hard time correctly identifying some colors. I don't think it is a problem as there is a very wide range of normal. OP please do not stress! |

Hi, OP here.
I only asked because I didn't see anything in my books about this and was very curious. My son just turned 18 months and is very verbal so all of the responses make sense. Not stressed....just interested and looking for nice moms to help me out. thank you to those that took the time to respond. Thanks |
| We have a box of 8 big Crayola crayons that we began using with our DC a couple months ago. I think this is how he learned the basic colors (e.g., blue, red, yellow, green) and the concept of what a "color" is. Just last week he started saying "orange" and "black" so it's a continual process. |
