Great service for moms-to-be

Anonymous
Just wanted to let everyone know of a great service that my friend started called Nursery Know-It-All. Kim is a mom of 3 and helps expecting parents figure out exactly what items they need and cut down on the time one might spend wandering the baby stores. I'm due with my first in 2 weeks, and she's helped me navigate the overwhelming array of baby items...including everything from strollers to bedding (and everything in between). It made the actual registering process go so much more smoothly. She was also available to answer any of my questions and never made any of my concerns seem trivial. Feel free to check out her website.... www.nurseryknowitall.com

sorry this sounds like a silly expense-even on your first kid you just ask a friend and there is always one..what to buy and you go from there. You can also..for free..go to either Buy Buy Baby or babiesrus and have one of their "baby consultants" help you or..also for free..read DCUM website

true, but not everyone has friends who have had kids yet or family that lives in the area. i have been to buy buy baby to try and look at strollers and trying to get someone's attention to really discuss strollers is tough. it's not an easy decision to make when you are conceivably shelling out $300 or more on something you are going to use for a few years. it might be nice to talk to someone who has used the gear and knows what is good and what isn't junk.

Consumer reports will help you with this. I used them whenever I invested in a stroller or car seat. You don't have to pay for this advice. Sorry.

Why should I pay someone for their personal opinion based on their experience. A little common sense goes a long way...I would rather save my money for diapers and wipes and other items. I second the Consumer Reports and the online reviews on epionioin.com.

what a job, wish I thought of it. Save your money. Buy what you like, internet is great source for info on baby needs.

This is a personal shopping service, and like any other, you are paying for a service that you don't *need*, but might want for convenience or any other reason.

So, I don't think it is silly or useless. May not be your cup of tea, but there are many people who would appreciate *not* reading all the research, etc. and having someone just pick it out for them!

It's also an ad, which is prohibited on dcum.

Though I'm not sure how it's any different than the COUNTLESS posts about which OB to go to and why.

Personally, I wouldn't pay for a service like this because I already know that I don't want most of the junk that's out there for babies. But to each her own, and if you have the money, and you're really crunched for time and truly feel anxious about this, why not? There's a service for everything...how to learn to have a baby, how to get your baby to sleep, nutrition for babies, exercise classes for moms and for babies, transporting to and from activities or daycare, diapering services, baby registries, etc. etc. Kudos to this mom for figuring out a business for herself.

To PP, it's actually a recommendation.

I think it's a great idea, but the costs are a bit high. I think I'll continue to muddle through instead of paying $95/hour. If it were cheaper, I'd definitely consider it.

Honestly, a better way to go about it would be to partner up with a reputable baby store in the area...

Just buy the Baby Bargains book, it covers almost everything that you need to buy. I think the OP sounds like a fake post that is really an advertisement posted by Kim herself. Isn't that prohibited on DCUM?

This is hardly a new concept business although it is new for this area. All one has to do is google "baby concierge" or "baby planners" and you'll see a few of these type businesses in places like LA, NY, etc. Good for her for bringing this type of service to DC. People can choose to use it or not. Some might find it helpful if they are short on time or on bed rest, etc. Let's be a little less harsh here.

I agree with the pps. Just buy the Baby Bargains book or do some internet research.

I think it's different. When ask about which OB to go to, they are asking others in a similar situation for advice on what to do. The doctor, or the doctor's friend, isn't posting and saying women should come to them.

I am all for supporting women owned businesses and working mothers, but I think the way the OP went about advertising this service is a bit cheesey and misleading. I don't think this forum is the appropriate place for something like this, this forum is more for Q&A on upcoming babies, OB, etc., not promoting your own or a friend's business without full disclosure. I wish the woman who runs the business well and hope she is successful, but it kind of leaves a sour taste in my mouth the way the original post was drafted. But then again, it's an anonymous forum so that's life I guess.
