Evaluating schools in a neighborhood

Anonymous
We already live in a great neighborhood, but we are looking to move to a larger house (real estate is a separate topic). But now we have a newborn and we need to consider schools when we consider moving. We have no idea how of the best way to do this. Is there some sort of resource out there to help us get information? Or, do we simply come on to a board like this and say, "What can people tell me about schools in Neighborhood X"?

Thanks in advance for any help.

two websites to check out are:

greatschools.net

and the county education website of whatever area you are looking in, because they have info on demographics and test scores for a school, if that helps you make a decision.

I would also talk to potential neighbors who have kids, maybe at open houses? I know realtors aren't allowed to say much but sometimes some of them will say something cryptic and that will tell you something.
