DCPS employee came to my door asking about our boy

Anonymous
I guess they're cracking down. A DCPS employee (she showed me her ID) just came to my door asking about our boy who graduated DCPS middle school and then went to a private high school. I guess their records had him going to the inbounds high school. We told the MS about the private high school but I guess that wasn't recorded. Anyway, I'm impressed with the outreach.

So she was concerned about absenteeism?

This is important improvement especially after the Relisha Rudd tragedy. We got a call from DCPS central - named employee who gave me her call back number - when we moved our DD from DCPS to private a few years ago.

Yes. He was "enrolled" there but hadn't shown up. In January. 2018.

That's interesting, but you're saying they waited 5 months to inquire as to why a child hadn't shown up? That's not good!

Yes. But, it's better than nothing and maybe it's changing for the better.

Yes. We got a letter from the high school inquiring in fall 2017. I tried to reach the staffer responsible but her voice mail was full. I contacted someone else in the HS office who said they'd leave a message. So, they tried last year. Nice a human took the time today to follow up in person.

Yeah, I'm thinking this too. When we put my DS in private school this year, our public HS (not DCPS) called me within five days of the start of the school year inquiring about our son.

Glad DCPS didn't find a skeleton after five months...

Did you request and receive records from the previous school? Grades, transcript, etc? When I switched schools, the school I was leaving required that I sign off that I was enrolling elsewhere and provide the name of the school. They then sent the records to the new school and asked them to sign off. It was a Charter I was leaving but I have friends who had the same experience/requirement at other public schools.

I have two but not sure who you are asking. Or why??

Explains a lot about the "drop out" numbers.

Quick check for the future: will this become a bogus DCPS absenteeism excuse at some point? “It turns out some high schoolers were enrolled at their local HS and had never attended, pushing attendance rates down. It turns out they were attending St. Albans all along!!!”

Its not bogus; it just isn't the whole story.
