employers who offer jobs without checking background or even references

Anonymous
So this has actually happened to me twice. Most recently, I was offered a job, got the offer letter and realized that they never even asked me for my references or any information to do a background check...does this happen often? I mean, I don't really care but I'm just wondering how common this is. just a lazy employer? I have a super honest face? lol

you must have some high-demand technical skills they really need

is it possible they will do the checks after the offer is accepted? is that a thing?

I don't know about reference checks but my employer made an offer once and only then did the background check. Had to rescind the offer after making the all-staff announcement and everything.

I think this happened to me once. It was one of the fastest offers I've ever received as well.

Turned out that I walked into a position that had high turnover and didn't stick around there too long myself.

But at the same time one of the people did the hiring knew some of the people that I worked with at the time. So I never really knew if the person I was working with put a good in for me without me knowing.

But that type of experience made me kind of wary when a company seems a bit too eager to fill a position.

I took a job where they didn't check my references, and I'd be wary of any place that does that. In my case, it ended up being a company which was desperate to fill a position, because no one could please the owner, and they ended up either firing people or having them quit within a few months. The fact that they didn't ask any of my former employers about me should have been a warning sign to me.

Op here- it wasn’t such a quick offer. Took them like 4 weeks. Could they just Ben lazy?

My last job didn't check my references, but I have a security clearance, so I'm clearly legit.

I'm a teacher and I have worked at 5 independent schools. None of them called any of my references, ever.

NYC biglaw - at least at my firm. Though I wonder if that's bc they free ride on the NYS bar -- i.e. a first yr associate just passed the state's character/fitness interview which would've incurred any fake degrees, crime issues etc.

References are a joke. I get calls from employers all the time. Here's what I am allowed to say - "Bob worked for X Corp. for 2 years. Bob worked for X Corp. from July 2012 to July 2014. Bob was never placed on probation for misconduct."

This is a good article about this - http://www.thelawyerwhisperer.com/question/how-to-bypass-the-b-s-and-get-the-dirt-from-candidate-reference-checks-part-1/

This is appalling. And it’s how things like this happen.

I am at an independent school and they called five references, so that’s not an across-the-board thing. In fact, these are such small ecosystems they’re often really careful not to bring in someone toxic to the culture.

Happened to me once when during an interview I was offered the job on the spot. All I can say is it was the right fit at the time.

This has happened with me for 2 companies. I think they did do background checks but never checked my references.
