We currently have two cars (small SUV and sedan). DH keeps hearing stories of people who moved to a minivan after having a second baby. I'm unconvinced.
If you moved to a minivan after #2, why? What are the use cases where a small SUV wouldn't work but a minivan would? Did you need the minivan right away, or was it more helpful later (when kids were in school, etc.) to help with carpools/etc? |
| We have two teens and never had one. We had a wagon and a sedan. |
| Nope. |
| Minivans are for the car pool years. |
| We have 2 kids under 5 and have not bought a minivan yet. We have a Subaru Forrester. |
| No way |
And with an SUV, you can fit 3 kids in the back easily. So unless you want to transport half the baseball team, you should be fine with an SUV. |
| No minivan. No regrets. |
| If you think you will have a 3rd- go minivan. If you won't- skip it. |
| We got a minivan when we had a 2nd but we only did that because: 1) our car (sedan) was not running well and needed to be replaced anyway and 2) my parents were looking to get rid of their minivan and were willing to sell it to us for a great price. Otherwise, we would've gotten either a small SUV or another sedan instead. The minivan is great for road trips or for the rare occasions we have for hauling stuff (mulch, Christmas tree, furniture). I imagine it'll also be nice to have the van once our kids are older for carpooling. Otherwise, definitely don't need it and would rather have a small SUV. |
| Minivans are a pain to park. Why get one if you only have 2 kids? |
| We moved to a minivan right before our second was born. One of our cars was leased. The lease was up and we did not want to purchase the car. Plus, we regularly had my dad with us. Having the third row was great with three adults and two kids in carseats. Nobody was ever smooshed and there was plenty of room for all the gear we toted around. Best decision we ever made. Now that the kids are older we have friends in the car and having the third row is pretty much necessary (unless you never want to carpool). |

WTF no. We have an suv and a sedan. There’s plenty of room in both for two car seats.
I’d never be caught dead driving a minivan. I don’t care how much you “love” yours. |

2 kids - 2 sedans
when #3 came along - we went with minivan b/c 1 sedan died and I had 3 kids in car seats (oldest was low on the growth curve). Glad we did it for 3 - on days when it was pouring rain - so much easier to get everyone in and out. Minivan is now 8 years old - we are planning on a mid sized SUV when it needs to be replaced. |
| Not necessary. Many do, not necessary. |
