I’m looking ahead to high school for my 2e student with HFA/ASD. Are there any FCPS high schools known for providing good Special Ed. support? My student has executive function challenges, but also has areas of great interest/ability. Also, what about IB vs AP? What should we be thinking about?

I've been told that IB is not a good teaching model for DS with ASD/ADHD. DS has been attending a dual language IB school since preK4 in 5th grade now and his school continues into IB middle and high school. We are switching to a more traditional model for middle school not in this area.
IB involves a lot of group collaborative work probably the worst type of teaching model for someone with ASD. My DS does fine with his favored peers - he's known most of his classmates since he was 4 - but with kids who are not in the "favored" category, group work is a big fail - DS doesn't want to work with them and won't engage. That said, if your DS is good in the sciences and math, I would look at TJ. I know several Aspergerish kids who are doing very well there. |
| We had a good experience with McLean HS with an LD/ADHD student. |

My child avoids group work and prefers to work alone, so classes that involve a lot of collaboration and discussion would be very difficult. I assume there are more seminar-style IB classes

| What about the amount of writing in IB vs AP classes? |
Lots more writing in IB. That's IB's main strength. Even IB in elementary school involves a lot more writing. |
| We are in Springfield. Can anyone in that vicinity tell me about their 2e child’s high school experience? We are especially interested in hearing about Lee, Edison, Hayfield, West Springfield, Lake Braddock and perhaps South County. I’m not interested in hearing about Great School ratings, but about the quality of special ed support and social environment for a 2e student. |

| Join SEPTA - Fairfax and get on the Facebook 2E Facebook group. There are many people with experience at those schools that could give some excellent on the ground information. |
Thank you. I’ll do that! |
