i love mormons

growing up catholic i didn't know any mormons. i am now sort of a zen atheist. but in the last 8 or so years i've developed an affinity for mormons. it started in hawaii (largest mormon population outside utah), where i worked for and became friends with a number of mormons. i found them intelligent and level-headed, hardworking and ethical business people, friendly and genuine and not at all weird. i was invited to parties but never felt proselytized to. since having kids and moving back to the mainland i've noticed how family-oriented they are, how accommodating they are of children in all areas, and how much respect is shown women for being mothers. am i right that there is some magic in the mormon community? can i join without adopting their beliefs? only half-kidding!

This is how they suck you in OP. By being superficially nice. it's a cult. Read "Under the Banner of Heaven".

Most mormons are nice people, that's for sure. But try to never forget that they are part of a cult.

DP. Are they being nice to achieve a particular goal, or are they being nice because that's simply their nature and the way they treat everyone? Will they be nice to you even if you join and then leave their church, or will you see a different side upon leaving?

I had a lovely Mormon friend growing up. She answered questions as her religion as they came up, but she never proselytized. She was sweet and considerate. However, I think only Mormons got to be part of her very inner circle of friends--the rest of us were kept just on the outside.

Agree with everything you said. But for all the respect toward mothers, you can't say the same for the LGBT community. And I have a problem with that.

I love a Mormon, my DH, pioneer stock even. But he's not active in the church at all and hates it. His family moved from the east coast back to Utah when he was a teen and he hated it and their compulsion to force everyone to act the same way. That syrupy sweetness with the force-fed life choices leads to life-long depression for many, many people.

Ok first, Hawaii does have large Mormon population but it is nothing compared to Idaho, Wyoming and Arizona. JFYI.

As a fellow Catholic I like Mormons too. They aren't trying to suck me in. I like their focus on family and their devotion to their communities. Many Protestants believe that Catholicism is a cult like the Mormons so we got that going for us too.

And Under the Banner of Heaven is about the FLDS.

Those who really care about you will be ok, if not upset. The church will not let you go quietly.

Oh sure it's great. As long as you don't have doubts, aren't gay or are brown skinned.

BYU has a big campus there, so it's possible the OP was near that campus, too.

+1 I've met some Mormons that I've loved, and some who are close-minded and bigoted. Just like all religions-there are good apples and bad apples.
