| We are planning on planting a tree (fig or pear) this year. What would be the best time to plant? |
| Spring or fall. The middle of summer will be stressful on the plant with the heat, and in the middle of winter, the ground is too frozen to dig a hole. Winter would actually be okay if you could dig the hole. |
|
I think spring better than fall(personal preference). at least with spring planting, you get see if the tree grows and buds out and leafs out properly.
you could plant pretty much any time the ground isn't frozen. summer is by far the worst time, unless its a tropical |
| We just planted a fruit tree today. It arrived in the mail and we dug our hole. |

Figs are not a good choice for this area.
They used to do quite well around here, but climate change has meant that winters here are getting colder and colder. We had fig that was almost 25 years old, and twice now in the last five years it's been winterkilled all the way down to the ground. Probably again this year, too because of last weeks weather. Believe whatever you want about global warming, but the fig trees don't lie - it's colder here lately than it's been in a lifetime. |
BS unless you in FL or Australia or something, the ground is a block of ice all over the NE now. And no nursery would send a tree to be planted in this region in January, so no. |
Figs do great here, and even if they die back to the ground they don't actually die, so it doesn't matter because they regrow and set their main crop of fruit on the new wood. |
I kid you not. The tree is dormant so it doesn't care. |
| There are any number of cold tolerant figs. |
Dying back to the ground isn't "doing great". It's barely surviving. Plus, it sucks having a large tree that's a prominent landscape feature die and have to be removed down to the stump, then having it take years to regrow to its former size. Our fig was 15 feet tall when it was winter killed. It still hasn't re grown back to that height yet, and this winter probably killed it again. |
Exactly. The tree is dormant. I dunno WTH some of these people are thinking. |

Chinese proverb “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second-best time is now.”
In case that helps. |
Fall. avoid the constant water all summer and intense July/August heat . |
| Our arborist said fall, but we have planted in both spring and fall. Fall is easier because rainfall is plentiful so you don’t have to water. |
