Trying to figure out spring break plans for our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids who are 6 and 9).
Option 1 is to fly to Jacksonville and spend 2-3 days in St. Augustine--DH and I went years ago and loved it--would visit the old city, the fort, hang out on the beach. Then would drive to Orlando and do 2 full days at Universal, mainly for the Harry Potter stuff. Kids are not really into rides but I think would love Harry Potter since they've read and LOVED the books. But it seems realllly pricey for what it is. Option 2 is to fly to Cancun and stay somewhere south--Playa del Carmen or Tulum. Would visit ruins, snorkel/swim, probably do some other touristy stuff. I went to Mexico as a kid but other than that we've never been. Not sure we could afford one of the higher end resorts, but apart from those, price would be similar. Anyone done BOTH and want to help steer me in a clearer direction? TIA! |
| Ugh. Neither. |
| Florida. No need to deal with international travel if you don't have to. |
Thanks, that was SUPER helpful! Have a great day! |
Ha I thought both sound good. |

Mexico. The FL theme parks will be a madhouse.
We liked Club Med Cancun. |
| I like your choices. Do your kids get a say? If you want warm weather I’m thinking Mexico. Florida could be warm too but maybe not as reliable as Mexico. I’m not familiar with the beach in Jacksonville but if you are beach people the bleaches in Cancun area are so nice. |

IS your spring break at the end of March? If so, I would lean towards Mexico. The weather in St. Augustine at the end of March may or may not be warm beach weather. That, plus I would fear the crowds at any of the Orlando parks.
We just did a cruise that went to Costa Maya and Cozumel, and my kids (ages 10 and 6) enjoyed a trip to a ruin as well as beach time. There's lots to do in the Mexican Riviera areas. |
My apologies. I'm grumpy because I haven't had a travel vacation in years. However it's true I would rather go somewhere else - like the canyons: grand Canyon, Zion, Monument Valley, Lake Powell, etc. |

OP again--thanks for the helpful suggestions!
Yes, we are looking at end of March. Warm weather is a must for me as I will likely be nearing the end of my rope by then--not a winter person and tend to get very down/depressed post-holidays/pre-spring. So sounds like Mexico would be a better choice. Kids would like any place warm and sunny. I think they'd be into either but DH hates crowds so Universal might be too miserable for him. |
No worries. I get it, and I am sorry you haven't had a vacation. We did nothing other than drive to visit family for many years. Having been to all of the places you mention--some pre-kids, some with kids--I have loved them all but most/all will be freezing cold in March. Hope you get a fun vacation soon. |
Ugh. Those state park trips aren't vacations: they're just trips. |
| Go with Harry Potter! I would watch the movies before you go to get them really jazzed. They'll flip over the Hogwarts Express! |
If you stay on site at Universal, you'll have Express Pass and at least won't have to wait in line. We have stayed at Portofino Bay and enjoyed the pool. The rooms are HUGE. |

Mexico. Last time we went to Florida for spring break it was in the 60s most of the week. That was in Orlando. It got into the 70s on our last day there, kinda chilly for the waterpark. They get cold snaps.
