Katherine Graham, Personal History.
I really enjoyed reading about the publisher and chairman of the board to Washington Post. The ultimate Washington inside story written with frankness and intelligence. A fascinating account by an impressive person. This won her Pulitzer Prize. |

I liked these and had a hard time putting them down:
The Blue Bear: A True Story of Friendship and Discovery in the Alaskan Wild by Lynn Schooler (sad) The Lady and the Panda: The True Adventures of the First American Explorer to Bring Back China's Most Exotic Animal by Vicki Croke (sad) Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland by Gerald Clarke (sad but fascinating) Never Have Your Dog Stuffed: And Other Things I've Learned by Alan Alda (seriously, he's had an interesting life and the book is funny) |
| I second Katherine Graham. Love love loved that book! |

Madeleine Albright's memoir was wonderful, though it's not short.
Highly recommend Jill Ker Conway, The Road from Coorain. Anyone who is high-achieving but did not grow up in an environment that nurtured those aspirations will find it especially good. |
| The Sisters: The Saga of the Mitford Family -- this was one of the most fascinating biographies I've ever read. |
| Second vote for The Road From Coorain--amazing book. |
| How about biography-based fiction? Nancy Horan's Loving Frank is the story of Frank Lloyd Wright's mistress Mamah Borthwick Cheney. (Both were married with kids when they met and they threw is all away to run away together in the early 1900s, when that was definitely NOT an acceptable thing to do.) It's a complicated story of a woman looking for fulfillment and the genius/ass she loved. And, if you don't know anything about FLW's biography, the ending will really shock you. |

I loved Eat, Pray, Love.
Also loved the Glass Castle. Katherine Graham's book was fabulous. Just finished Christopher Buckley's book, Losing Mum and Pup, which was also very good. |
| My husband just finished Steve Martin's autobiography, Born Standing Up, and loved it. |
