I just learned that once Mrs. Obama left her 300,000$ plus University of Chicago position the job was eliminated.... So how vital was this high salary position then to their operations? So many of my friends make so much of the fact that President Obama turned down all kinds of money as a Harvard grad to be a 'community organizer' ""with the people""" - but I find that undercut if his wife's position was a pay for play sinecure, plus the million dollar home, the girls in private school etc. etc. Sheesh..not so inspirational to me at least.

I don't care about the million dollar home and private school. That is their business, but that job was a bit odd. I sometimes think that the medical profession was trying to nice up to them in case he got into the White House, with health care reform in mind. |
Well here we go then!
|
The million dollar house did not arrive until he made his money writing two best-selling books. Why are you hating on his million dollar house, when half the people on this list serve live in million dollar homes or close to it. President Obama was a community organizer. Are you suggsting that his Harvard educated wife cannot earn money, if her husband chooses to pursue a more alturistic career. |
I don't see how it could be true. She had the job two year before he was elected to the Senate. Unless maybe they were trying to impress a state senator. How do people come up with these things? |
I wouldn't even waste your time with these folks. People will see whatever they want to regardless of the actual situation. Conspiracy theorists will leave no stone unturned in their pursuit for some sort of scandalous, outrageous scenario. |
What exactly did he organize. Sounds like a branding term to me. |
I don't find the elimination of her job unusual in itself. I have no clue if odd politics were going on to hire her in the first place or not (although I doubt it).
Working in the public sector myself, I know a LOT of jobs are being eliminated because of severe budget deficits, and VACANT positions are the first to go. |
Forget conspiracy theorist defense! Just sticking to the facts. He could "pursue a more alturistic career" since "his Harvard educated wife" paid the bill. We're just saying... |
She got the pay raise soon after he made it onto the national stage. |
He was the first to admit in his book that he had little success as a community organizer. |
My point was that they did not manufacture the job to cozy up to a Senator because the position existed prior to that. That would contradict the implication of OP. And as for the salary, it looks like she got a one title promotion. That's hardly outrageous. I'm sure it was worth some money, but probably not a massive jump. She didn't go from Associate to EVP or anything. |
This has pay for play all over it; and sorry--you don't get points for community organizer nobility when your wife is raking in cash from people seeking future influence to subsidize your current 'sacrifice'. The more I learn about the Obamas' history, the less I am impressed by the reality that their promise translated into. |
Yea, but it is still odd. Not scandalous, but odd. |
Everything is odd if you are looking for conspiracies. There are plenty of possible explanations. For example, maybe they reallocated the work to a department that has extra capacity due to the downturn. Or maybe they are facing budget decisions that force them to pull back on all public relations functions to concentrate on direct care. Or maybe someone wanted that work really badly and took it over within the existing org structure. |
