Guidance counselor recommended DD look into CTCL.
Can someone explain the benefit of these schools? Any experience with these schools. Motte are very small unknown schools.

They are listed in some book. They apparently do a good job with advising so unfocused kids figure it out and learn stuff.

They are good schools. Generally not elite, but solid schools that do a solid job.

Seems like a marketing gimmick to get parents to pay $200K for some obscure school where their kid will come out making $35K/year.

Hard pass.

I went to a CTCL many years before that was even a thing. It was a great educational experience. I then went to a top five law school and excelled there academically. I like many of my classmates had a scholarship that made the cost comparable to our instate public. To respond to PP very few kids pay full freight at these schools and there are typically many scholarship opportunities available.

Well, you can pass on the schools but, a lot of the big named schools ( Ivies) use teaching assistants to teach Freshman classes so your kids would do better learning from the professors at these types of schools. But, keep thinking what you do! Good for the rest of us.

? I was telling the OP a good place to look if she wanted to know more about these schools. The site has a description of each of them. May be a better source of info than some of the jerks on this forum including yourself.

My son just graduated from one this past May, summa cum laude and departmental honors, in a hard science and now pursuing his doctorate. He was accepted at much more prestigious colleges but chose a CTCL because it is well known for the science he is interested in and because he wanted to really know his professors. He got a very generous scholarship. H e easily found his academic peers and his professors were excellent and gave him a lot of personal attention . He absolutely received a fabulous education.

OP - note the graduation rates. Some of the graduation rates are lower than I'd accept even though they are on the CTCL list.

Read the book. It will explain in great detail what the numerous benefits are.

PP is right that you need to pay attention to the graduation rates at each college.

My child is in one of the CTCL schools, and doing great. I graduated from a NESCAC school and am envious of DC’s experience, which I think is better than mine was.

Which college? I know Reed has excellent math and science, but would love to find another CTCL school with a top math program.

St Olaf is very well known and respected for their math department and is a CTCL. My DS almost went there, is a 1st year at UVA now, and regrets his choice.
