I am pregnant with my third child. I delivered my first two children with midwives, the first in NYC and the second at the Maternity Center in Bethesda. I had a great experience at the Maternity Center. Unfortunately, the Maternity Center has closed and the new practice "Midwifery Care Associates" has three new midwives and delivers out of Shady Grove. Has anyone used this practice? Any thoughts on delivering at Shady Grove? Any thoughts would be appreciated. |
Hi there,
I just met with one of the midwives there today -- the 3 still who are now the new "Maternity Care Associates" all worked there before the change, and their back-up physicians are the same. Shady Grove sounds nice -- private rooms with jacuzzi tubs, all private recovery rooms -- and it seems like they're mainly able to operate like they did in the birth center there, although with some modest changes due to the fact that it's a hospital. THey're having info sessions monthly and will also do free meet & greet sessions one-on-one (which is what we did) to answer your questions. I felt really good about the meeting, and am planning to go with them for my first child's birth, as the other birth centers in the area sadly don't work for us for a variety of reasons. Hope this helps! |
PP, do they still offer well-woman care as the Maternity Center did, or is that no longer available? |
Isn't there one by that name in Annapolis? Is there one in Montgomery county now?

If you are looking for a hospital birth with midwives, then MCA is probably a good bet. You will still have some restrictions because you are at the hospital, but from what I understand they will work with you as much as possible. The other good option would be going to Washington Hospital Center with the DC Birth Center midwives. However, if you are looking for a birth center birth, then your options are Special Beginnings in Annapolis, the DC Birth Center which is located in NE DC, or Birthcare in Alexandria. All three of these birth centers are fantastic, and because of their locations they really cover a wide geographic range in the DC Metro area. OP, if you are interested in more specific information about any of these just let me know. |
Do you know anything about GW hospital, whether they work with midwives? |
Not PP, but no, GW does not have midwives on-staff. A list of midwifery options in the metro-DC area: http://www.birthoptionsalliance.org/midwifery_dc_area.asp |
Oops, forgot to mention Karen King, CNM at Virginia Hospital Center. She is with Drs. Rossi, Crowther, and Masel. |
