Does MCPS offer ANY programs for high school age students to travel abroad for a week+?
Our child attends a MCPS HS but I have nor found any info on any travel trips at the school. Think, French Club looking to go to Paris and need a few more kids ( $$) to get a group rate, etc |
| none. you'll need to look into private companies for this. |
| My kids are not in HS yet, but the MS definitely has international travel via the foreign language program - Quebec, Costa Rica. |
| I'm pretty sure MCPS doesn't sponsor travel. Some schools may provide opportunities - a teacher or group of teachers is the sponsor and brings in an outside company to organize, but MCPS plays no part. (This was the experience with the travel opportunities at Roberto Clemente and Poolesville HS) |
| I've seen opportunities at a W school. Or maybe it was for spring break. There are tons of private opportunities for students to go abroad. Doesn't have to be with your school. |

Why not go on a trip with your kid? If money is an issue, then look for air and hotel package deals.
The private companies that do international trips for teens are fabulous, but they are really expensive. Both of you could take a trip abroad for less money. Are there certain countries you are interested in? Or certain languages? And honestly, the money is probably best invested in study abroad during college. |
| Not through MCPS, but a few years ago I went to a language school in Costa Rica and have been thinking of taking the family along to do the same. There are a ton of them, and many offer homestay experiences along with formal teaching (I did a half-day of formal class when I went). Other half day is free to poke around the city, and on weekends they planned optional group excursions. I'm sure something similar is offered in other countries/languages. The homestay experience is a key ingredient-- much better than having US high schoolers hang out with other US high schoolers in exotic locales. |
